Anyone know why they stopped in April? We had to use Emerald at Easter!

easyJet have released its Spring 23 flights for LBA BFS with it being 2 weekly (Fri & Sun) sadly we don't have any W22 flights on sale yet (which could be good for Flybe & Aer Lingus) but there is still plenty of time for that to change. Good to see they're still committed on the route & hopefully will add further rotations in the coming months.

Does anyone have any idea or even a definitive reason as to why easyJet chose Liverpool for its second UK base ? All I've ever heard is rumours that once they were firmly established at Luton, easy wanted to set up a northern England base and Leeds Bradford was its preferred choice. As we know, it never happened and I've never known why. Today, such a situation would be unthinkable, even with the current sub-par infrastructure we have. But twenty-five plus years ago, LBA was wide open with little competition, a fact not lost on Channel Express a few years later.

Now I could be well wrong here, as the old memory isnt as good at it was 25 years ago...but I think the owners of Liverpool(no idea who they were then) pitched directly at Stelios..At that time, Easy, wasnt a cash rich business, Manchester were still in hock to the legacies, but Stelios was anxious to expand his business. Liverpool fitted the bill perfectly because it was in the North West catchment area and they wanted more passenger through put to balance the nighttime freight business..or something like that....Leeds was at that time run by the councils so I`m not sure if they even pitched for Stelios`s business.

Yes GO...I`d forgotten about them..Run by the very capable and charismatic Barbara Cassani. Parent company BA pulled the rug and the plug on her just when things were starting to go well, so LBA might well have been within their sights. All BA wanted was its legacy Business class customers not the plebs.....in fact somethings never change with them..People say if only they`d stuck with GO but they never would have..BA management couldnt comprehend the concept that Stelios and O`Leary ended up making their own

LBA was owned by the Council's but they didn't run it. LBA had a management team just as they do now and they worked to bring airlines in, as they do now. Individual Councillors from the owners were represented in the airport board and the Chair alternated between Leeds and Bradford Councils. Otherwise it was run as any other airport.

Nothing was ever said to indicate that easyJet had an interest in LBA to the Consultative Committee, and back then the airport was a lot more forthcoming with information than today. Earlier, in the early 1990s, TNT wanted LBA as a Northern base for their BAe146 freight operation, but we're prevented from doing so by the night time closure in force until 1994. They went to LPL instead.

Other than that, BMI Baby had an interest I believe, being part of BMI who were long established here. The Chairman, Sir Michael Bishop seemed quite happy with LBA generally but as usual nothing happened other than Jet2 in 2003.

Baby went to Teesside instead and didn't last all that long there. Likewise, Globespan who came along afterwards. I expect Stelios and Ed Anderson will know the real deal with easyJet and Leeds Bradford but I doubt they'll be spilling the beans. One rumour I did hear repeatedly was that British Midland and Air UK were rather dischuffed at the thought of easy invading one of their strongholds.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
