Leeds Bradford: Airport Application To Amend Night Flying Quota Methodology

Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
Wouldn’t a shuttle bus down to Horsforth station be a better option though with its direct links to Harrogate, York, Wakefield, Doncaster and Leeds of course.
There is nowhere for a shuttle bus to pick up at Horsforth, unless they more than double the width of the car park entrance and install traffic lights so a bus could get back out again on to Station Road. That exit and junction is a nightmare. The car park itself isn't big enough for a bus either. I think the building and wall at the exit are listed too so that would be a problem, whilst Scotland Lane is totally unsuitable too for buses.

Apperley Bridge doesn't provide the direct link to Harrogate, Knaresborough or York so far less appealing, but its 10 minutes up a main road to the airport, and maybe better than nothing in the medium term until the WYCA sort themselves out and build the Parkway Station. The cost of doing something at Apperley Bridge would be low too I would think. How many people would use it remains to be seen.

A bus or coach down Scotland Lane would be fun and I think it is already restricted to vehicles less than 7.5T
Apperley definately the better option road wise!

The other thing to note is that unlike Horsforth, Apperley Bridge is PRM compliant so is much more accessible. It is not beyond the capability of LNER to stop their trains at Apperley Bridge which gives you instant services to Wakefield and Donny. Doubling the A2 frequency should be doable.

So who’s going to get on a shuttle bus down to Appley Bridge then wait for a train to Bradford or Leeds when the current direct buses will still beat them as things stand.

The maybe now that the Woodlands building merchants next door has closed. Knock the building down and build a new bus lay-by and larger car park and make it PRM compliant.

I’ve seen single deckers go down there before on divert. I’ve even been on a first Leeds wright Ecliose when they use to run the 757.

If every dedtination was served from Apperley Bridge the following destinations would be reachable.

Airedale & Bradford Line

Shipley
Frizinghall
Bradford Forster Square
Saltaire
Bingley
Crossflatts
Keighley
Steeton & Silsden
Cononley
Skipton

Settle & Carlisle Line

Gargrave
Hellifield
Settle
Horton-in-Ribblesdale
Ribblehead
Dent
Garsdale
Kirkby
Stephen
Appleby
Langwathby
Armathwaite
Carlisle

Bentham Line

Clapham
Bentham
Wennington
Carnforth
Lancaster
Bare Lane
Morecambe
Heysham Port

While the destinations along the Bentham Line like Morecambe or Heysham Port might not carry the same international prestige as direct links to major hubs like York and Harrogate on the Leeds Harrogate line, capturing direct connections to Lancaster and Morecambe would hold commercial value for Leeds Bradford Airport.

Passengers across North Lancashire including Morecambe, Lancaster, and the surrounding areas historically default to Manchester Airport due to direct, uncomplicated rail access down the West Coast Main Line. Currently, a rail traveler from Lancaster or Morecambe heading toward LBA via Apperley Bridge must change trains at Shipley. Restoring a direct rail leg straight to Apperley Bridge would potentially make LBA a far more viable alternative for holidaymakers using LBA from Lancashire.

I’m not knocking it, But don’t think you’ll get both Northern & LNER to make all there services stoppers at .Apperley Bridge just for an Airport shuttle bus, Hence I’m my own option I honestly don’t see it been feasible option..
Meanwhile Horsforth is already served by both operators and with improved access would be make it alit more viable in my opinion

I don't disagree, I think the point @Bigman was making was any connection is better than no connection at all. The connections I mooted were potential west bound connections but obviously significantly more routes would be available by connecting with Leeds, all of which would be doable if the parkway ever happened. The actual Apperley Bridge station is already geared to handling bus traffic which is why it is a possible stop gap while we wait for the parkway and Leeds is already on the line.

Woodlands is still operational, although not in the old format, it is now concentrating on Tiger Shed sales, so I am told by my parents who live on Sussex Avenue, so the building wont be being knocked down!

And what was it you said yesterday about just being able to squeeze onto the A1. Sorting out the A1 is the best option. Make it limited stop and increase the frequency.

100% in agreement with you on that. As I was on that 13:00 journey out if Leeds yesterday and can confirm it was rammed full. Either keep it every 30 mins and put double deckers on it or increase the frequency back to very 20 mins

Is improving the bus connection the correct long term solution? Travel times between Leeds Bradford Airport and the city centre are deteriorating year on year. The strategy being implemented by Leeds City Council which dismantles the previous City Loop and eliminates cross city driving alternatives is systematically cutting off car access without providing any viable, high capacity alternatives. For instance, a journey from Yeadon to the Royal Armouries yesterday evening resulted in a grueling two hour round trip by car. This gridlock highlights a stark lack of sensible, fast, or workable cross city transit options left for those who must drive.

I have to agree with the above. Recently I planned a visit to the Royal Armouries and found the Water Taxi not working, so had to walk. Coming back I asked about a bus to the city centre. There isn't one I was told. So again walked back to the centre. Not what I expected for a city the size of Leeds. I cannot believe that after all this time the Parkway Station is delayed again. Especially after the link road to the A65 was cancelled.
What on earth are LCC playing at, someone needs to get a grip on things and behave like most city Councils.

Don't dare mention Donny, you'll have the Save DSA brigade spitting blood at you accusing LBA of pinching their passengers. Don't forget they are going to start flying in 2028 to the likes of Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and the like with daily flights, never mind pinching Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz and TUI.

It isnt the decision of Leeds City Council. It's the West Yorkshire Combined Authority under the control of Tracey Breadbin. LCC want the parkway station but there are people on the WYCA representing other towns and cities who may well see other priorities. We need a mayor who gets a grip and is proactively pushing the LBA transport agenda. She seems totally fixated on buses and trams and shopping!

I must also point out that nothing can happen without the cooperation of Network Rail.

Apperley definately the better option road wise!
I wouldn't want to be meeting a bus on Scotland Lane at it's narrowest points. !

Brunel and the other great Victorian railway engineers must be looking down shaking their heads in disbelief. Unsuitable sodden ground didn’t stop them, they just came up with solutions and got on with it. Significantly their structures stood and are still standing the test of time.
They need to build a single carriageway link road half a mile long, and a car park, not a motorway. It beggars belief that they buy the land via CPO and then now, 10 years down the 'process' start complaining the land may be unsuitable. They should have ensured the land was suitable before buying it!!

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
