Air Transat

In the curve call that I suspect most of us didn’t have on our bingo card!

Great news BHX!

Yup, not even the merest hint of a whisper on this one which I much prefer over the rumour mill.

Great to see them back, well done to all those involved 🙂
Fantastic news- I think even BHX maybe surprised as I think they said they were aiming for transatlantic flights in 2028 😃

Primera !
We never got to see their LR’s due to late aircraft deliveries. They leased an old National Airlines 757 for BHX and only lasted a month or two before pulling out.

It’s a huge relief to finally see an experienced operator giving BHX a go with the A321LR.

A trip to Canada is about to get a little easier for travellers across the Midlands. From June 2027, Air Transat will fly direct between Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), opening up a new non-stop link to Canada’s largest city.
Published 29 October 2026

For those planning a city break, visiting friends and family or setting off to explore Canada, the new route means less time spent changing planes and more time enjoying what the destination has to offer.

The inaugural flight from BHX will depart on Wednesday 23 June 2027, with flights operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays until Saturday 23 October 2027.

Passengers will enjoy Air Transat’s award-winning onboard experience aboard the Airbus A321LR, a new-generation aircraft combining enhanced comfort, a modern inflight entertainment system and complimentary meals, while offering improved fuel efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint.

The new service responds to strong leisure demand for travel between the Midlands and Canada, with around 10,000 passengers travelling indirectly between Birmingham and Toronto in 2025. Demand is driven by close family ties, student mobility, working-holiday programmes and corporate transfers between the two countries.

The UK is home to approximately 81,500 Canadian-born residents, including nearly 67,000 in England. This established community supports a steady flow of Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) travel between the UK and Canada.

Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer at Birmingham Airport, said, “We are thrilled to be adding this new route from Birmingham Airport with Air Transat. Toronto is a destination people across the region have every reason to be excited about, and the fact they’ll be able to fly there directly from their local airport is something worth celebrating. We’re really proud to be making this happen and cannot wait for the first flight to take off next summer.”

“The launch of our new Birmingham–Toronto service reflects Air Transat’s commitment to making Canada more accessible from key regions across the UK,” said Sebastian Ponce, Chief Revenue Officer at Transat.

“Travellers across the Midlands will benefit from a convenient non-stop flight to Toronto, together with onward connections to major destinations across Canada through our partnership with Porter Airlines. Birmingham is a natural addition to our UK network, and we look forward to welcoming our first passengers in June 2027."

Toronto is a city known for its mix of culture, food, sport and entertainment. Visitors can take in the views from the iconic CN Tower, visit the Royal Ontario Museum, tour Casa Loma, North America’s only full-sized castle, or attend a game of one of the city’s 8 major professional sports teams.

The city also provides a base for exploring the wider province of Ontario, including the world-famous Niagara Falls.

The new service will also offer onward connections from Toronto with Porter Airlines to destinations including Vancouver, Montréal, Calgary and Edmonton, giving Midlands holidaymakers more options for exploring the birthplace of maple syrup and ice hockey.

Tickets are now on sale and can be booked through Air Transat.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
