Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
Sunday papers were full of stories speculating about Easyjet making a bid for Monarch. So we may yet see more Easyjet flights from LBA, but sadly at the expense of Monarch

It's only a few weeks since the owners of Monarch said the airline was not up for sale but then again, some would say no smoke without fire? The plot thickens.

Well as the owners of Monarch are Grey Bull Capital, who have just bought TATA Steel at Scunthorpe (and who are, according to reports, now considering purchasing the plants at Rotherham and Stockbridge) they may consider selling the airline to help fund the purchase of the steel plants. But, they are an investment company, similar to Bridgepoint, so they could sell some other part of their portfolio, or none of them at all. Personally I would have thought it wasn't the right time to sell Monarch - especially to an airline like Easyjet, who operate Airbus aircraft, whilst Monarch have on order a full fleet of new Boeing 737 Max aircraft!

As soon as I heard Graybull were to acquire TATA Steel at Scunthorpe I instantly thought the same. Time will tell.

Well they have since said that Monarch is not for sale, although it seems like they are considering investment from elsewhere with another company buying shares.

Monarch announced yesterday its closing its maintenance facility at manchester with the loss of 123 jobs. Would have thought this a good purchase opportunity for someone. Looks like Graybull is getting rid of all the add on at Monarch and stripping it back to a basic LCC. There will be redundancies at Birmingham and Luton in the maintenance division.

I heard a well known Leeds based airline maybe very interested. Watch this space.

You would have thought Graybull would have tried for a trade sale before announcing the closure. Looks like their anxious to close the unit as soon as possible.

If the well known Leeds based airline does opt to buy said Monarch facility, I hope it is not at the expense of the maintenance done at Multiflight, which not only provides business and employment for them and this area, it keeps a healthy flow of aircraft into and out of LBA. It would be a real shame if the majority of their maintenance went over to MAN. However, if they bought the facility to do their own major maintenance instead of flying aircraft over to Belgrade etc, but continued with Multiflight as they do now, then that would be good all round I guess?

For me it is inevitable they will end up being a Manchester based airline thats where the passengers are in both summer and winter plus a proper airport offering with facilities they can use and avoid costly diversions. It is good business for them to have a hanger big enough for purpouse over there as it is the biggest base they now have.
I do not want this but it is looking more likely than ever.

Slightly off subject for Easyjet but it's a natural progression for Jet 2 gaining full maintenance facilities. The airline has come through difficult times but they have got through it and building nicely again.

I am assuming A300 that your not suggesting Jet 2 move lock stock and barrel? It would be a shame that their original set up base could go albeit still with flights.

On Multiflights maintenance I've always been a little disappointed with their ambitions. It would be good to get some other airlines visiting for maintenance unless Jet 2 have exclusivity!!

I believe we will always have a Jet 2 operation over here in Leeds but it would not surprise me if the main airline base was moved to Manchester in the future as they grow the operations they have there. They have occupied simulator facilities in Bradford and I understand they have office space around the area so they have cimmited themselves to this area for the near term but Ringway is such a perfect place to expand an airline with opportunity for growth and hanger space to boot and all the other infrastructure you need in place plus a vision for the future.

The size of the airline operation at a particular airport is irrelevant when it comes down to where an airline based. British Midland were based at EMA, but it was nowhere near their biggest base for the airline operations. Flybe are based at Exeter, but again, it is nowhere near their biggest centre of operations. Based on your theory, they would move to MAN too!
Why would Jet2.com shift its airline base to MAN simply because it has marginally more flights out of MAN than LBA? The head office is in Leeds and they have invested greatly in putting their offices in new premises in Leeds, they still have Low Fare Finder House, and their training centre in Bradford. Moving it all to MAN would result in the loss of experienced Leeds based staff, and cost a fortune. There is no reason to do it even if MAN had twice the flights LBA has.

Just a little heads up even though it's a bit late. good to see Easyjet.com recommence Geneva - Leeds Bradford operations again today.

Would love a summer flight on this route, could even get the prime minister on.

GVA probably doesn't sell as well, or yield as well, in Summer as it does in Winter. Jet2 used to operate GVA year round (think it was dropped off in Oct, Nov till December & Ski season) but was dropped.

There isn't the tourist traffic to support it in the summer although it is a lovely city to visit.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
