Exeter International Airport (EXT) - General Thread

Re: Exeter International Airport

I agree, Aviador.

There seems little doubt they will be summer only. Nice was last operated by Flybe from Exeter until 2009 and it was a summer-ony route then. It would be a great surprise if Nice carried on through the winter as it would be for Barcelona which is a brand new route for Exeter.

Re: Exeter International Airport

Flybe are certainly expanding more and more out of the domestic market, and whenever I have flown down to AGP, their Embraer's always seem fully booked!

Had a friend who flew down up from Exeter to Leeds on the Thursday evening flight last week... He said only 20-30 people on the flight. Flying back on the Sunday, I presume it was a similar story and he only paid about £50 return...

Whether that's profitable or not, I don't know...!

They've canned the EXT-LBA (at least for the winter) so I guess not.

CAA stats August 2012

80,708 passengers were handled at EXT's terminal in August, down 6.1% on August 2011. Atms were down 0.4% so loads must have been generally lower. Rolling 12-month total was 699,673, down 3.2% on a year ago.

It looked as though EXT was bumping along the bottom this year after losing over 30% of its passenger numbers since 2007 but this month has taken below the 700,000 per annum barrier for the first time since well before 2007.

The new routes mentioned in previous posts, due to start next summer, are badly needed if passenger numbers are not to fall further next year.

Re: Exeter International Airport

CAA stats September 2012

73,674 passengers handled in the month, down 9.3% on September 2011. Atms were down 1%. Rolling 12-month total was 692,269, down 3.5% on a year ago.

Exeter has had a disappointing summer. After four years of non-stop passenger losses (over 30% since 2007) it looked at the beginning of this year that things had reached the bottom.

In fact, most months this summer have replicated September with passenger numbers down considerably more than atms in percentage terms.

Re: Exeter International Airport

Toronto

The Air Transat summer service to Toronto on behalf of Canadian Affair will not operate in summer 2013.

A Toronto summer service has operated from EXT for over 20 years, usually via another UK or Irish airport.

For the past few years it's been via Newcastle and the NCL service has also been axed for summer 2013.

CAA stats October 2012

Exeter is still treading water when it was thought that 2013 would stabilise the ship after the 30% passenger losses of the previous four years.

October 2012 saw 62,711 passengers handled, down 8% on October last year. Atms were down 3.2% suggesting that loads were down across the board.

Rolling 12-month total was 686,796, down 3.6% on a year ago.

Re: Exeter International Airport

CAA stats November 2012

43,840 passengers were handled in November, a rise of 17.4% on November 2011. Atms were up 7.4%.

Another beneficiary of the later half-term holiday this year that extended into November. Decent figures all the same.

Rolling 12-month total is 693,305, down 2.1% on this time last year.

[textarea]Firefighters are unhurt after engine rolls over on Exeter Airport runway

Three firefighters escaped injury after a fire engine overturned on the runway at Exeter Airport yesterday.

It is thought the vehicle might have taken a corner too quickly but the cause of the incident was still under investigation last night.

The fire engine was undertaking a “routine” manoeuvre at the eastern end of the runway yesterday afternoonwhen the vehicle ran into trouble and landed on its side.

The firefighters were examined by paramedics at the scene of the incident at 3.40pm, but did not require medical treatment.[/textarea]

Full report at: http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/Firefight ... z2KVUFPACi

Although this happened a week ago I thought I'd mention it as it must be a comparatively rare occurrence at an airport despite the Exeter Airport spokesman saying: “This kind of incident can happen when large, heavy vehicles are doing routine manoeuvres."

January 2013 saw 33,828 passengers pass through EXT, down 1.4% on January 2012.
Atms were down 6.4% which suggests the fewer flights were seeing higher loads.

Rolling 12-month total was 694,476, down 2.2% on a year ago.

After losing over 30% of its passenger numbers over four years (EXT was once just over 1 mppa) 2012 saw a levelling out. Like CWL, it seems the bottom of the long fall is in sight, possibly even reached. At both there are now glimmers of hope that some small gains might be imminent.

EXT is in thrall to Flybe to such an extent that the airline's problems inevitably reflect on EXT. Equally, in the Flybe good times EXT saw substantial growth.

SOU has suffered from the same problem in recent years.

EXT has had a summer Toronto service for around 20 years, almost always (possibly always) a double drop with another UK or Irish airport.

In 2007 it had two services each week, the long-standing one to Toronto Pearson by Transat and the other by Globespan to the Ryanairesque version of Toronto at Hamilton.

As things stand there are now no Toronto services from anywhere in south west Britain.

Forgive me if you are aware of this background superking but the posts are also read by others who may not be.

Re: Exeter International Airport

February 2013

CAA stats show that 34,959 passengers were handled at EXT in February, down 2.5% on February 2012. Atms were down 11.5%. Rolling 12-month total was 693,320, down 2.2% on a year ago.

A basically flat month then and there might have been a very small amount of growth without the leap year factor. A positive is that despite over 11% fewer flights passenger numbers were down only 2.5%.

Re: Exeter International Airport

March 2013

CAA stats show that 45,544 passengers passed through the EXT terminal in March, down 1.1% on March 2012. Atms were down 2.9%. Rolling 12-month total was 692,784, down 2.4% on a year ago.

So EXT continues to be flat, a trend now well established since the previous four-year-plus trend of monthly falling passenger numbers. Clearly this a more agreeable trend but the management must be hoping that there will be some movement this year in the direction of their 1 mppa figures of 2007.

Re: Exeter International Airport

CAA stats April 2013

EXT continues its rather flat course.

53,468 passengers were handled in April, up 1.5% on April 2012, with atms down 0.4%. The rolling 12-month total was 693,294, down 2.6% on a year ago.

[textarea]Balfour Beatty to sell Exeter Airport

Balfour Beatty is looking to sell its majority stake in Exeter International Airport, according to reports.

The FTSE 250 infrastructure group has been speaking to potential bidders over the past few weeks, Sky News reported.

In August, Balfour wrote down its 60pc stake in Exeter Airport from £12m to zero, saying that “while underlying trading has not deteriorated we believe that the timing for recovery of passenger numbers has gone further out, particularly in the light of the imposition of increased Air Passenger Duty rates”.

The group bought the airport from Devon County Council in 2007 for £60m. It is unclear how much Balfour is looking to offload the stake for.[/textarea]
Full report at: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/news ... rport.html

It seems this has much to do with Balfour Beatty's wider difficulties although EXT, like a number of airports, has had a difficult five years through the recession and beyond.

Ironically, when the local authority put up EXT for sale the preferred bidder was the company that owned Bristol Airport. Many in Devon objected, the EC and OfT entered the fray looking at possible competition issues and Bristol withdrew.

It might be that EXT would have done better under Bristol management than it's done with its current owners.

Re: Exeter International Airport

CAA stats May 2013

76,381 passengsre were handled in May, up 6.3% on May 2012 with atms up 5.2%. Rolling 12-month total is 697,712, down 1.9% on a year ago.

The increase is due mainly to increased Flybe rotations on summer sun routes.

So after several years of seriously falling passenger figures, and then a generally flat 12 months or so, it seems there will be some upward movement this summer.

[textarea]Patriot Aerospace snaps up Exeter Airport

Balfour Beatty has sold its majority interest in Exeter Airport to Coventry-based Patriot Aerospace, part of Sir Peter Rigby's business empire.

The sale of the 60 per cent stake is for an undisclosed sum and the proceeds of the deal are to be used to repay Balfour Beatty's funders. The construction group added the carrying value of its investment had been written down to nil in 2012.

Re: Exeter International Airport

Balkan Holidays

Exeter was due to have a short season in summer 2013 to Bourgas from late August for five weeks.

It appears to have been pulled as Bourgas no longer features on the EXT website list of destinations nor on Balkan Holidays' list of departure airports; neither does it feature in their summer 2014 list of airports.

However, Newquay Airport is to get two departures to Bourgas with Balkan in summer 2014, one in May and the other in September.

Re: Exeter International Airport

CAA stats June 2013

EXT handled 83,338 passengers in June, up 9.9% on June 2013. Atms were up 7.9%.

Rolling 12-month figure was 705,151, down 0.5% on a year ago.

Flybe is the driver of this increase with additional sun and sand rotations so, like CWL, EXT is beginning to see small green shoots of recovery after several years in the doldrums.

Indeed, I did. Not sure if it was the weather or the glass of Sancerre I was probably sipping at the time. :hatsoff:

Exeter's July CAA stats are now in the public domain and the recovery is getting up a bit of steam.

86,774 passengers were handled in the month, an increase of 12.8% on July 2012. Atms were up 14%. Rolling 12-month total was 714,928 which is up 1.4% on the same period a year ago.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
