Monarch will be offering flights to ski destinations Grenoble and Munich

08 May 2012

Today, leading scheduled leisure airline, Monarch, announced that it is to launch new flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport; operating routes to both Grenoble in France and Munich in Germany.

The new scheduled flights represent a further increase in Monarch’s scheduled capacity, with the first programme of ski destinations as well as reinforcing the airlines’ determination to deliver an all-encompassing proposition; offering choice, value and superior customer service from all of the major gateways in the UK.

Beginning in December 2012, the scheduled airline will commence operations with three weekly flights to Grenoble and two weekly flights to Munich. Both airports are famed for their excellent links to ski resorts covering the Western, Central & Northern and also Eastern Alps in France, Switzerland, Bavaria and Austria.

Today’s expansion brings Monarch Airlines’ scheduled services to a total of 87 routes across Europe, from Leeds Bradford International, London Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham and Manchester airports.

Kevin George, Managing Director of Monarch Airlines comments: “The launch of scheduled flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport is an exciting move for the airline as it also coincides with the introduction of our first programme of ski flights. The network of scheduled flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport will further strengthen our existing operations and we are delighted to be able to bring our high levels of care and service to customers travelling from West Yorkshire in the future.”

He continues: “With over 40 years heritage we are confident our new flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport will be a huge success as we continue to widen the range of leisure products available to our customers.”

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport’s Commercial Director, said: “We are delighted to welcome the introduction of Monarch to Leeds Bradford Airport offering two new exciting ski routes serving the French and Austrian Alps.”

And here are the flight timetables for Monarch 2 new winter ski routes.

MON7567 = Grenoble 11:15 - Leeds 12:00 MON, THU & SAT
MON7562 = Leeds 13:00 - Grenoble 15:45 MON, THU & SAT

MON7573 = Munich 11:55 - Leeds 13:00 FRI & SUN
MON7572 = Leeds 14:00 - Munich 17:00 FRI & SUN

Grenoble is now on the destination list on the Jet2 website from LEEDS. Did I not say only last night that Jet2 are just about to announce it!

Going by the Monarch website, looks to be an A321 rather than A320!

Is it about strange that Monarch have only added 2 routes, don't they usually operate out of their bases? As LBA is not a base, could this mean something positive if these routes work out?

Don't get too exicted. Monarch are decreasing their fleet, with 757 & A300 leaving soon, and no replacements. With no replacements there will be no fleet growth. No Fleet growth = Impossible to run routes alongside the routes they have, unless they suddenly decrease their offerings. Decrease offerings=Decreased/Angry Customer base. Worst comes to worst. It's not hard maths, and i don't understand why ZB would not be able to work it out.

I bet the first divert will be within a week of operations. Due to the A321/Weather up at Leeds great decision by Monarch there.

Our weather isn't that bad, plus as far as I'm aware there aren't any issues with Cat 3b approachs. Secondly as was proven last week, a gatwick based, first time visiting crew brought a 757 in. And they do suffer in the wind.

At the end of the day, we should be happy that the airport is going places(pardon the expression) rather than looking at faults/possible problems!

Welcome to Forums4airports and congratulations on making your first post!

I couldn't agree more with what you have just said and I am sure that both the airport and Monarch Airlines have done their homework.

Re A321 ops, previously mentioned performance issues with the A321 shouldn't be a problem on the shorter hops. An A321 flying to say Turkey will carry a lot more fuel than a flight to France or Germany so the breaking and take-off distance will be significantly less than on flights to Turkey for example.

Again it's great to see Grenoble on the map but I think its a huge gamble operating on an A320 three times a week - that's a similar weekly capacity to what we have to Rome/Nice/Menorca even in the peak summer months.

The lack of competition has caused this to happen. So long as only one or two airlines operate on such routes the airlines will inevitably keep their prices artificially high to maximise their yield and who can blame them? That might be great for the airline but it's not much good for the passenger looking for a bargain flight, or for the airport when it's trying to make money out of airlines carrying as many bums on seats as possible. Jet2 has a great product and they shouldn't have any problem filling seats from Leeds but Monarch has an excellent and well known brand too so I expect they will do well on these new routes, especially on the Munich route.

Personally I can only see this as a total positive for lba, and seeing as there is a lull from around 11 and 1400, anything that adds movements in these times is great.

And with only 22 stands its of benefit to lba to have non based w pattern flights. Overall though, the more the merrier and lets keep this going.

Real radio are reporting it will create jobs will it? Surely crews are gonna be based at the origin/end airport check in/plane prep etc will be handled by the current LBA staff. so will extra jobs be created?

The 757 is a total different beast all together and no one should ever compare it with its CLOSEST competition, the a321. It complete blows all A321, no matter what you compare with it, out of the water. The 757 can make perfect winter weather landings on 32, get in and comfy. Can fight with the winds, and get it. The A321 will struggle, the breaks are not very good, especially when the runway is going down hill. So if the crew are faced with weather that may bring them with a touching down zone on the "hump" + Breaking distance = Overshoot of the runway. I don't know technicals, i just know thats the case regards the a321. It's very brave, especially with NEW routes & NEW airline.

I hate to be the one who brings everyone back down with a bit of a bump but I can't help feel that we are getting a little bit carried away with the Monarch talk. Firstly, this is all still speculation to some extent as it is yet to be announced. Secondly, the Munich and Grenoble routes appear to be set up with ski ased package holidays in mind. Certainly, Grenoble would not run past winter and the continuation of a Munich route would depend entirely on aircraft availability and, as has already been mentioned, the Monarch fleet is going to be further stretched in coming months.
Of course, if this is to happen, it is all good news for LBA but let's just cool our expectations a little bit.

Simple fact remains that the crew will do their sums. If its got enough room to land with the weather conditions they will make an approach. The fact of 'humps' in the runway and poor breaks is not really relevant.

Secondly I wasn't comparing the a321 with a b757. I was simply saying that if a non based crew in a 757 can get in with high winds and a wet runway, there is no reason that a non based crew in any other type couldn't do the same. Something we see all the time.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has actually interviewed Monarch's managing director today as well. It mentions that they have been looking to expand into Yorkshire area for some time and have been talking to LBA for a while. It also looks like Monarch have further plans for LBA. As it states the following: Expect further route announcements in the “next few weeks” and said that jobs would be created, although no figures were given.

Interesting times a head, Me thinks.

Leeds-Bradford Airport announces arrival of Monarch Airlines

Published on Tuesday 8 May 2012 13:07

A NEW airline has announced it will operate from Leeds-Bradford Airport.

Monarch Airlines will be offering flights to Grenoble and Munich from this winter to attract the ski-ing market.

Airport bosses say the move will benefit the local economy and boost passenger numbers.

Monarch Airlines carries seven million leisure passengers annually to European, African and US destinations. It has been operating for 40 years.

Kevin George, managing director of Monarch, told the YEP: “We have been looking to expand into Yorkshire for some time and have been talking to Leeds-Bradford for a while.

“Monarch is about leisure and leisure passengers are looking for a relaxed, smooth and efficient way through the airport but with the facilities to start their leisure time.”

The airline will start offering three weekly flights to Grenoble and two weekly flights to Munich in December. Both airports are well-known for their links to top ski resorts.

Mr George said that there would be further route announcements in the “next few weeks” and said that jobs would be created, although no figures were given.

John Parkin, the airport’s chief executive, said: “It’s fantastic news for us. Monarch is a highly respected airline.

“Leeds-Bradford has not met the demand for local air travel by some distance so the arrival of this new airline is hugely timely.

“Airports are employment-generating machines and having a partner of this scale, size and quality is going to further accelerate that.”

Tony Hallwood, Leeds-Bradford’s commercial director, told the YEP that the current £11m redevelopment work at the airport is helping to attract new business.

He said: “At the heart of the growth and development of the airport is about helping to stimulate the local economy.”

Nicholas1992 You really shouldn't say things like that if you don't know the facts.

Here's the runway requirements for a 5,500km journey. Obviously other factors would need to be calculated but basically there's ample runway available for a 1098.95km trip to Grenoble.

[textarea]Airbus A321-200 Takeoff : 2180m, Landing : 1577m 5,500km with 185 pax[/textarea]

Grenoble is only 1098.95km according to http://www.distance-calculator.co.uk/di ... enoble.htm

So with greatly reduced payloads ie less fuel = greatly reduced landing distance and take-off run requirements.

Wasn't saying i was an expert just simply pointing out whats already being pointed out by other memebrs with regards to the A321/LBA & Brakes. Also pointing out it's a big brave move, going straight to a A321, instead of putting a A320 on to test out how successfull they would be.

Aviador thank you for that. Just pointing out that at some point there will be a divert to MAN due to the weather and that the A321 is a brave move by monarch. I hope it does work out for them.

It's a brave move by Monarch which could back fire or be a big success. I think it'll be a success and it may force a few airlines like Jet2 and Easyjet to introduce these routes and going into competition with them.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
