Eurowings

Great to see DUS back but very surprised FRA will not be served as it is a much bigger market from BHX ?
if I had to guess why DUS is returning to several airports before FRA, it's probably because a much bigger percentage of FRA traffic is onward connections to the rest of the world, but that market is unlikely to recover in the immediate future for many countries/regions.

You have a good memory, Rollo, quite correct about Brussels and Frankfurt with BMA in the 70's.

I also remember the BEA Viscounts and Vanguards and actually flew on both of them as a teenager to Heathrow to spend the day spotting, every worse remember British Midlands predecessor Derby Airways and their DC3s can't remember where they operated to though!

I wasn't aware Derby Airways operated from Birmingham. From Burniston and then EMA.

Yipeeeeee, summer 21 is back on. 😍

Get ya passports dusted off, sun cream topped up and ya face masks, well not sure what im going to do with them, ha

Well us Brits are all supposed to be vaccinated, as for there loyal german fan base, who knows what is going on over the channel ???? Not much if the news is anything to go by ?

Only my opinion but I have a feeling this won't be much more than putting aircraft where the demand is. With the UK forging ahead in administering vaccines and a subsequent surge in summer bookings airlines will likely be looking to get their piece of the action. I really can't see this being much more than a one season wonder.

That said, it adds much needed capacity and brings even more punters through the door which is what the airport and it's concessions need.

Who knows, if the routes perform well it may give them something to think about in the longer term.

Now, if they could just give us Hamburg?

Of course it is a case of just deploying aircraft where the demand is but with PMI being a base for EW, if successful it may not be just a one season wonder. Great news though at this tough time, one thing which is positive at the moment is airlines are thinking outside the box. I feel we will see a few more shock announcements like this, I think VY could add more.

Frankfurt started in the 1970s with British Midland Viscounts who also started Brussels at the same time and if my memory is correct originally the service to Frankfurt was via Brussels but became separate routes quite quickly. British Airways took the routes over with One Elevens in a route swop with BMA.

bit of thread drift here- sorry.
British Midland and the Viscount....Great memories

According to news on airliners
Euro wings to open a Berlin base.... fingers very crossed to Brum ?
Fingers crossed!! The absence of this route really does stick out considering how frequent it once was. Hopefully Eurowings remember BHX when they plan the routes. I think this route would do extremely well and the strong presence of other LH Group airlines will only help.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
