Decent stats for August 🙂

Birmingham 1,029,512 +8.9%

Helped by rapid Monarch expansion whilst baby were still doing the sunshine routes. Good news nevertheless.

It's nice to see a ray of sunshine amongst all the doom and gloom.

Indeed 9% is a very healthy increase. With increased fares into the London airports I'm wondering if BHX inadvertently saw some extra pax heading down to the Olympics.

Air transport movements were up 6.2% in August so a rise in passenger numbers would be hoped for/expected.

Nevertheless, a 9% rise in passenger numbers is impressive.

[textarea]Birmingham Sees More Growth Than Any Other UK Airport

Birmingham Airport is flying high after figures released this week reveal passenger growth increased by over 9% year-on-year in August.

The growth in passenger numbers for the month was higher than at any other UK airport during the same period with one million people passing through the Airport.

The record-breaking month saw an incredible 1,031,259 passengers fly in and out of the Airport, making it the 4th busiest month in the company’s history. It is also the 9th time the Airport has pushed through the one million passenger mark.

Another good month.

946337 up 4.7% rolling year 8838663 up 2.6%

Movements 7995 -0.2% rolling 83960 -0.2%

The record September was 2005 at 1022998 with 2008 next at 984127, I believe this comes in third.

Somewhat disappointing long haul figures. IST performing well as expected, also a nice surprise with a significant increase in Air France CDG traffic. BRU drop in line with capacity reductions from Avro to Q400. AMS holding up well despite BMIBaby's exit from the market, not too bad overall on Euro routes.

Has there been any underlining factors other than national economic factors affecting the international routes? The Toronto and Newark figures are very disappointing.

After checking it, the YYZ decrease can be attributed to the A310 operating most of the September flights, I had assumed it was still A333.

EWR however I am at a loss to explain, most likely it is just general economic conditions.

Was the EWR daily in September?

Air France have quite an intense radio advertising campaign going on at the moment here seemingly focusing on long haul connections, Hong Kong and Bangkok are regularly mentioned amongst others. The figures could be a sign it's working?

BHX +3.3%.

Seems half my post disappeared. The above is current year to date, October was up 4.3%. Not bad after losing bmibaby.

That's the rolling year figure. The month of October 2012 saw an increase of 4.3% on the same month last year. That's not bad at all. A lot of airports have seen big reductions in comparison.

Indeed, BHX looks to have weathered the loss of bmibaby well. I think EMA was hit hard, not checked but I heard it was something like -11%.

Lufthansa seemed to have doubled the numbers on Hamburg from last year.

Easyjet averaged 111 pax per flight, a 71% load factor, on Belfast. A healthy start to the route.

Turkish up 54% at 8686 which is approx 140 per flight, around 85-90% load factor. up to 10x weekly from next year, maybe we'll see double daily in the future if the numbers continue to rise.

Emirates down 2% with a load factor of 76%. Could be affected by the strong Turkish loads but hopefully the slide has been stopped. By all accounts the business loads are healthy.

Stockholm averaged 70 per flight for the three flights, hopefully they'll stick with it. Paris up 14%, DUS up 10%, AMS down only 10% which isn't too bad after losing bmibaby and Munich up 22%.

Munich up 22%, didn't you say Monarch was canning it's planned Munich service due poor loads?

Monarch have cancelled the Saturday Munich services for the rest of this month.

Monarch adding another 720 seats per week initially just seemed to dilute the Lufthansa loads slightly with not enough left over to fill the Monarch A320, I've heard loads as low as 40 pax mentioned. Last Friday it routed BHX-LTN-MUC-LTN, it didn't bother returning to BHX. Lufthansa should be OK as they have lots of BMW employees shuttling to/from Munich and the nearby Hams Hall plant. Maybe Monarch are continuing with it to keep the slots at Munich in anticipation of the ski season starting soon?

Thanks Ray, I suppose Monarch will attract more leisure type passengers than business passengers where as Lufthansa will attract a fair few business passengers, maybe some interlining passengers too.

Good set of figures Ray. In the economic climate we're in at the moment anything in plus (+) territory is good.

Indeed, quite surprising really, maybe the school holidays running into November this year helped somewhat.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
