Birmingham: Airline, Airport and Route Advertising

Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport
I can't see Icelandair using T2 either, I think they'll want the premium pax closer to the lounges and using the new pier. I reckon the advert is could be targeted at the last of the Flybe punters before their flights to KEF end.

It's good to see some advertising though it's going to be crucial if the new services are to work.

Surprised a few more airlines don't use the old Eurohub, it would probably suit Aer Lingus but I guess it's all to do with having enough parking stands.

Now Ryanair will be a based aircraft down and Flybe will have 2 or 3 less aircraft this summer I wonder if we will see any movement across to T2, especially in the mornings after EK start their third flight.

BHX to Madrid Direct

Norwegian.com billboard in Sheldon on the Coventry Road.

There is a similar ad on the Fort Parkway as you head from the shopping centre towards Bromford Lane, this one is advertising Malaga.

Was it that bus without wheels parked up near Sheldon Park that's being stored for spares? 😀 !

BHXsupporter, nice one I see what you did there!! 😀

I also have seen an AI advert on the back of a 94 bus in Chelmsley Wood this morning.
There is also a billboard advert for the Norwegian route to Malaga in Digbeth, close to the coach station.
Turkish Airlines use the Birmingham Mail every day for their service as well.

😆

I saw another Air India advert on the back of the number 55 bus today.

I've seen a couple of Norwegian posters pop up on bus stops too.

I've seen a few Norwegian billboards 2 right next to each other just off the matalan island heading towards the eastside development one advertised Madrid and I think the other was barcelona.

I've heard some adverts on local radio for Vueling to 'Barcelona and beyond'.

The advert advises people to book at vueling.com then goes on to spell V - u - e - l - i - n - g 🙂

Three conversations I've had this week.

The first was with a guy who went to Tokyo earlier in the year with Turkish Airlines. I asked about his experience which he said was good, when I said it's alot easier flying from Birmingham as oppose to the trek down to London he replied "I went from Manchester, Turkish Airlines don't fly to Birmingham". He seemed genuinely shocked when I corrected him.

Another chap is heading to New York soon. As I do I asked where he is flying from, the answer was London Heathrow. When I politely enquired as to why he said " because they have the big planes there, Birmingham cannot take big planes as the runway is too short so they can't fly to America!"

The third, and probably the most shocking, was a lady who was heading to Amsterdam at the weekend. She said she was flying from London Stansted as, and I quote, "Birmingham don't fly to Amsterdam!" I'm sure I can count up to 10 flights a day to AMS from BHX :dunno:

It goes to show what a huge task BHX has when it comes to making people in the region aware of what is on offer.

What I find extremely bizarre is the way all these people assume "a priori" that BHX has no flights to these destinations.

A couple of minutes research would have straightened it all out.

I don't think this is down to negligence on the part of the advertising team. Turkish are great at advertising, and I see their billboards everywhere. American haven't done too bad a job either although it has tailed off more recently.

As for Amsterdam... :s_omg

I agree with it being a bit bizarre.
It would be helpful to know where or how the flights were booked.
Was it online or with an independent travel agent? Some travel agents get incentives for pushing flights from certain airports or with a particular airline,so perhaps it may not be so surprising.
On a similar theme I have noticed that in the local press flights and tours are advertised to various destinations including many to places served directly from BHX.However a lot of these tours start from EMA,MAN,LGW and even LPL.
I know there are reasons for this but it can be very frustrating to see so many adverts encouraging West Midlands travelers to fly from airports 50 plus miles away, when the same service is available on their doorstep :s_omg

With regard to AMS I just assumed that the person in question went straight to the Easyjet website and booked the cheapest available flight. As for the other two I have no idea how they were booked but even now I speak to people who are unaware that the likes of Emirates and United fly from Birmingham :dunno:

Mr Kehoe may be interested to hear of this, Ray.

Because all of us have an interest in aviation and have a reasonable knowledge, at least of the goings-on at our local airports, we can fall into the trap of believing that the public in general is also relatively well informed. The fact that they are not and most have no interest in airports, airlines or the industry for their own sake means that their knowledge, even of local services, is often scant.

I speak to people in my area who know little about aviation and care even less (except when they want to travel somewhere) and it sometimes surprises me how many, for instance, automatically assume that CWL is busier than and has more routes than BRS because it's a capital city.

When the CO BRS-EWR route began in 2005 my son who was Bristol-based was travelling regularly to the USA on business. He always routed through LHR because that's the way his company's (a major US financial conglomerate) corporate travel agents decided.

I asked him one day why he didn't use the BRS route on occasions and he told me he wasn't aware of it (it had been running for around 18 months by then) and neither it seems was the corporate travel agency. He was sufficiently senior to have his future travel plans routed via BRS-EWR when he was heading for New York and sometimes when he was travelling further into the USA.

So it's not just BHX where the message hasn't got through to everyone. I suspect it applies at most if not every regional airport.

I think for any company getting your product, not just out there but also into the minds of the general public is one of the hardest things to do. Advertising can also be hugely expensive. I'd say airlines and airports may have extra difficulties as, for many, their products may only be needed once or twice a year and are completely out of peoples minds the rest of the time.

I was at the German Market last night and the large digital screen in Victoria Square was advertising some of our services.

American Airlines 'From one Grand Central to another', BHX to JFK, really stood out alongside an ad from Turkish Airlines. There were also adverts for Blue Air's new flight and for Qatar Airways.

I think there was also one generally advertising BHX but I'd had a diet coke or two and can't remember exactly

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
