Leeds Bradford: Aurigny Air Services Flights, New Routes & Schedule Updates

Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
Not at the moment no, but I am sure LBA S26 was released later last year than some other routes, not being released for sale until mid Nov 25 so let's hope it's not another airline and route we are losing. There is talk on the Dff that GR will op with 5x ATRs in 27 with 1 spare but don't know if that involves route and/or frequency cuts to accommodate that set up

We are going to be a 2 horse rodeo at this rate. And Harvey Nicks buggering off doesn't help.
Off-topic I know, but LCC have been choking the city's roads for years with their constant restrictions on cars. Leeds desperately needs a tram network and a properly integrated transport system with sensible car access. I drove my parents into town a couple of months ago to catch the Coastliner to Scarborough, and it was such a nightmare that the drive back up towards LBA felt like a walk in the park by comparison.

I am just totally confused with LBA......on the one hand, the biggest transformation is taking place to really drive the airport forward with its £100m development which looks great having just been through the new terminal extension and on the other, airlines are pulling out! Surely, as big supporters of LBA, we should be asking for some explanation of what is going on. It is totally baffling unless some major announcements are taking place once the terminal is complete

Aurigny pulling out may be due more to them predicting a loss of £10 million for this year and further loss of around £6 million for 2027 than anything LBA has done. They cite a 50% increase in fuel costs, competition from BA on the Heathrow route and costs associated with taking over routes from Blue Island when they collapsed, in additition to lower passenger demand. An all too familiar story at the moment I’m afraid.

Frankly, if Aurigny dont sort themselves out they wont be flying from anywhere. They lost in excess of £9.5m last year and with fuel prices now double what they were, things are only likely to get worse before they get better. From what I saw and heard, passenger loads varied from half decent to not great, but as, no doubt, they will continue operating from over the hill, this is probably yet another consolidation and yet again, LBA loses out to MAN. It is no coincidence that all three airlines leaving are non based carriers. For me, the idea LBA will expand to 7m by 2030 without more based aircraft is a pipe dream, which is why the current S73 application is vital.

The problem is that airlines are not really interested in the passenger experience at the airport. For them profit is all that matters. As long as they can get slots, the terminal building is of no importance. Makes you wonder why they spend so much to upgrade facilities.

Because passengers are interested in the airport experience. Not surprising when you consider a single return flight to wherever could result in passengers spending from 6 to 8 hours in terminals in total. The passenger view is completely different to the airline view. If passengers opt to fly from elsewhere then the airline disappears too. The sad thing is that airlines disappear for other reasons too, as we are now seeing. LBA is facing a complete turnaround from what was expected when they committed to LBARegen and at present, it's difficult to see where any growth is coming from given the situation airlines are facing.

I am sure your assessment is correct. Aurigny ditched Stansted a while ago and EMA before they even started there. The losses are significant and I guess that they are trying hard to save money. Consolidating on Manchester probably takes care of the North of England and ensures (?) a decent load and the rest of the routes are comparatively short sectors which consume less fuel and reduces the loss in respect of half full aircraft. A sign of the times in a very tough industry!

By providing a pleasurable airport experience, this should help persuade passengers to use LBA which should surely help fill services offered from there
But you also have to have the airlines people want to fly with. The loss of EasyJet is a big blow considering how big a brand they are.

Have any other airports also lost GR services for S27?
It's also ironic that MAN seems to be getting regularly slated for appalling infrastructure and poor on time performance. But yet airlines still seem to migrate towards it. So could actually start costing GR even more! That is of course, as has already been hinted, if they survive overall!

Contrary to what a lot of people have said in the past about LBA not attaching the Middle East airlines due to our terminal being poor. Agree with you 100%.

however the both go hand in hand - why do you think I airlines canvass passengers on their airport experience?? Why do you think airports attend forums like Routes to present their latest developments to airlines…..
I do wonder though why Manchester bothered 🤣 Must be the only airport which spends a fortune on its facilities only for BA to now send me an apology about the airport every time I have the misfortune to fly in there on the LHR shuttle

I have to disagree with the suggestion that passengers would choose Leeds Bradford Airport because they want a pleasurable airport experience.

In my opinion, passengers generally choose an airport for three main reasons:
  1. Distance from home — how convenient it is to get there.
  2. Flight price — how much the flight costs compared with other airports.
  3. Flight times — whether the departure and return times suit their plans.
Of course, everyone wants a pleasant experience, good facilities, short queues and friendly staff. But I would suggest these are secondary considerations for most passengers, rather than the main reasons they choose an airport.

If Manchester offered a better airport experience but meant an extra hour’s travelling, more expensive parking and a flight at a less convenient time, many people would still choose Leeds Bradford.

I for one am one of those passengers who turns up, has a beer and get on….no interest in shopping, airport or eating experience (food has always been iffy at LBA, even in the lounges)

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
