Manchester: Weather & Technical Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Use this prefix for new threads for Manchester Airport
As above,

Airfield was closed 0924-1000 due lighting failure on 23R/05L. Couldn’t swap to 23L as it’s only a CAT1 approach and weather conditions were below minimums for this.

Given the amount of time 23R has been closed this summer maybe it’s worth investing in a full ILS Approach for 23L…

Impact will be felt for the remainder of the day. Issues this morning compounded by a completely inadequate number of parking positions and closed taxiway sections.

In all honesty it’s indefensible now.

How long until the next closure of 23R due surface defect…

Many thanks, as always, for your information. I look forward to receiving a photo, shortly, from my usual source of the diversion as it arrived.

Be interesting to see if tomorrow’s 747 will use a remote stand or contact stand in T2 (if available of course). My bet is on stand 12, so potentially a first at MAN, two Lufthansa 747’s side by side.

As promised here is a photo, taken by Liam McManus, of LH470 as it arrived on diversion:

Storm Boelo..

The first of quite a number of diverts I suspect… and not one that I would’ve had on the cards.

FR4784 EI-EMN DUB-NQY has just touched.

CCGE29

FR4156 EI-IKD ALC-ORK will be joining shortly.

RK6696 G-RUKE MLA-EDI now also en route.

EZY857 G-EZAU LGW-ABZ also en route.

TK1345 TC-LCR IST-EDI now finals for MAN

There's a Jet2 en route from LGW. Not sure if it's the LS1008 returning.

We've just had a STN-GLA divert in. No futher details, sorry.
Other diverts from GLA & EDI earlier went to EMA & STN I think.

With today's posts from CCGE29 & David, I reckon the total starting with the divert from NQY yesterday is about 16. Can anyone confirm?
We did lose one or two of our own unfortunately.

STN-GLA was RUK175 G-RYMA

U27015 AGP-LBA OE-IVI
FR1504 GDN-LBA SP-RKVl

and one away RUK190 G-RUKM BFS-MAN went to LGW

So, 17 inbound diversions and would have taken more if not been hit with same issues. Top effort.

Starting to look like MAN will accept 6 wide-bodies and unlimited 737/A32x

Lots has gone on behind the scenes with regards to accepting diverts over the last couple of years.

The only diverts that didn’t make it in over the weekend had been accepted but better WX elsewhere saw them divert to EMA/LGW. Some LBA flights were operated as extras on MAN based aircraft also which may have slipped the net.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
