Rugby League

[Aviador]

For the first time ever I went to watch the Leeds Rhinos on Friday. They were playing Widnes Vikings at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium. The Rhinos haven't performed very well this season but they won 34 - NIL. It was good to see the stadium development coming along nicely.

Looks a nice stadium! Only time i've watched a League match live was when the Challenge Cup final was played in the Millenium Stadium and it was Leeds Rhinos playing. I can't remember who won but i do remember that everytime someone got the ball the crowd cheered and then stopped when he got tackled. I definitely wasn't converted that day but i will watch it now and then on the TV.

Probably not too many members remember Eddie Waring who was Mr Rugby League for many years so far as television was concerned. He commented on numerous matches over many years for BBC Tv. There was a time, I think probably in the late 1960s, when BBC2 televised a midweek floodlit rugby league competition through the winter involving top clubs.

Funnily enough I believe that Eddie Waring was more of a footballer (the association code) in his youth and had trials with Football League clubs.

He was also heavily involved with the tv game show It's A Knockout.

I do remember him just. He had an unmistakable voice but then again so do all commentators.
