Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
The only thing the airport can do is submit a planning application to amend any restrictions. The Council have no power to amend or disregard a planning condition whilst GALBA will ensure that there is no chance of them simply if ignoring any transgressions by the airport.

This at least shows LBA and Wizz are talking and working together to resolve the problems. It's not just Cluj though is it? We had Bucharest cancelled a few days ago (completely), and we have had cancellations on Katowice and Wroclaw. Whether the Polish version of Wizz can do what Wizz Malta has done remains to be seen, but they too have late evening schedules and fairly frequent delays.
But as their A320's and the A321neo's CAN operate within the current planning restrictions is it really necessary? Maybe they need the option to use their A321neo's- thats all I can think.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely.
There are only 6x A320NEOs in the entire of Wizz Air, and all are based in Tirana (TIA). So unless we see TIA as a new route, then it’s unlikely we get to see one of Wizz Airs elusive A320NEO.

The Cluj base is made up of 5x A320CEOs and 2x A321NEOs.
All of which are QC0.5 or less so can operate into LBA freely- as has been demonstrated recently.

Due to the continued delays, Cancellations and diverts Wizz Air Malta are rescheduling the The Cluj - Leeds flights from Friday, 4th August to hopefully help with it's reliability.

The route will continue to operate 3x weekly as follows.

Monday's & Fridays
WMT3313 = CLJ 16:25 - LBA 17:30 / WMT3314 = LBA 18:55 - CLJ 23:10
Wednesday's
WMT3313 = CLJ 20:15 - LBA 21:20 / WMT3314 = LBA 21:55 - CLJ 02:50
Excellent news, I did suggest this on Monday but received many comments shooting me down, saying not possible / very complex etc.. and you look at that. they done what I suggested.. I know the complexity behind scheduling/planning/slots, but it isn't impossible and is achievable.. ^ clearly. Wednesdays still tight but at least Mondays & Fridays are a lot better times. Great news

It's something I have suggested too, and clearly is possible. Where there's a will, there's a way, even if it might be disruptive . But it's not only the Cluj flight that's had cancellations. There have been others. Bucharest and Katowice to name just two, have been cancelled recently due to late arrivals into LBA on non NEO aircraft.

Neo aircraft are ok. Its just the 321ceo's that arent.

I agree going back to the council could result in further problems, from my experience from watching the zoom videos from a couple of years ago does not give me any confidence in these people ,they are a one trip pony all they keep going on is about climate emergency & cycle paths. Maybe in time but we need to know what exactly are the rules with these quota allocations going forward

Yes they are but then gunning to get the beloved DSA back open. contradiction much? of course. its a disgrace. Wizz could of easily just chopped Cluj altogether so for them to make the effort to retime shows that the route is preforming well and they want LBA operating. Hope the relationship between LBA & Wizz is a good one.

Still doesnt get to the nub of the problem- why have they been diverting. If they are using the A320 or A321neo theres no reason on noise grounds.

Some A320s are clearly rated qc 1 based on their maximum take off weight. The night flying rules introduced in 1993 (not last month) prohibit any departures after 23:00 for aircraft rated qc 1 or higher, which is why Wizz have diverted them to LPL. Otherwise the aircraft would be locked in until 07:00 the following morning and probably with a crew that was out of hours to fly it back. You need to move on from the idea that all A320s are qc 0.5 because it’s obviously not factually true. Otherwise Wizz wouldn’t be diverting aircraft l, cancelling flights and rearranging schedules.

They do have some A320-231's but according to the CAA they are not certified for the higher weight so still fall into QC0.5

Last nights diversion from Cluj was an A320-232. If I am interpretting it correctly in the table you provided no A320 of this version is above QC0.5, so there was no noise related reason for the diversion.

Just trying to get to the bottom of this!

Clearly that isn't a entirely correct, as the A320 232 is allowed in sometimes and other times it's not. I suspect weight is the issue for take off and a heavy A320 is crossing the line into QC1 territory. They won't know the weight outbound until all pax are checked in with bags and also how much fuel is to be uploaded. As Cluj is Wizz Air's longest flight from LBA, it will need more fuel, so potentially is more at risk of being deemed QC1 based on take off weight.

That might explain why the decision to divert was taken last night whilst en route - by which time the expected take off weight could be calculated.

Could be but the CAA expained to me a noise/weight certificate is issued to each aircraft based on the max weight the airline request, and that forms the basis for all future quota calculations.

Well, whatever the CAA think, LBA management have other ideas about what's ok and what isn't and it's almost certain those ideas are being dictated by Leeds City Council. They are not telling us what they are, so all we can do is guess. I do know fur sure though that the diverts are as instructed by LBA due to Quota Count issues, and that last night's divert decision was taken when the A320 was in the air, heading for Leeds. Clearly,.at some point, information came to light that resulted in LBA refusing departure after 2300, so forcing.Wizz to divert. Weight on take off seems the only plausible variable that might make that aircraft type be ok one night, but not the next.

Wouldn't surprise me if all the 'aviation experts' on Leeds City Council don't fully understand the QC rules regarding what constitutes a night time landing for specific variants of aircraft and are just making the rules up as they go along and dictating these the LBA management. No doubt GALBA have had their twopenneth in this making the position intolerable for the airport and airlines. The CAA need to get involved in this and sort the mess out once and for old and inform both LBA and LCC what is acceptable and what is not otherwise this will drag on for ages.

I came across GALBA's view on this whilst googling. Its quite informative and may give some clues.

I shall ask my contact at the CAA.
Exactly let the CAA dictate noise regulations to airports and let Leeds City Council deal with the issues they are there to deal with like roads being resurfaced, street lights, parks, bins collected verges cut and housing for elderly and those that need it etc.
You don't go to Gregg s for a bank loan

Unfortunately the CAA just gather information and produce reports. They are apolitical and its central government that decides on policy.

Clearly that isn't a entirely correct, as the A320 232 is allowed in sometimes and other times it's not. I'm tempted to say if they need to keep the weight down to still fly to LBA and just leave some outbound pax behind, but I can see that plan may have some shortcomings.

Don’t shoot me down for looking on GALBA web site, this is on there web site which refers to the 1993 planning applications

4) No departures in the night-time period shall take place by aircraft with quota counts of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 on take-off.

5) No landings in the night-time period shall take place by aircraft with quota counts of 2, 4, 8 and 16 on landing.

So if that’s right just need to look into the what quota the various aircraft fit into

The section of their web site that deals with the restrictions is actually very informative.

I would suggest everyone reads it. Know your enemy.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
