The £350m Transformation, Is GLA finally building the airport Glasgow deserves, or just playing catch-up?

Hi everyone,

With GLA celebrating its 60th anniversary this year (and that exclusive Glengoyne bottling hitting the shelves!), it feels like a massive turning point for the airport. For years on this forum, we’ve lamented the loss of routes to Edinburgh, argued over the lack of a direct rail link, and debated whether the terminal was showing its age.

But looking at the first half of 2026, the momentum feels undeniably different.

The return of United to Newark and WestJet to Toronto, alongside easyJet’s massive European expansion (Pisa, Lisbon, Malta), proves the airline demand for the West of Scotland is alive and well. On top of that, we have the ongoing Airspace Modernisation consultation and, crucially, the massive £350 million investment by AGS with WSP and Pascall + Watson leading a total terminal redesign.

It feels like the perfect time to ask a few big, thought-provoking questions about our hub's future:

The Terminal Redesign: The £350m investment promises a "transformational change." What is the single biggest priority for the terminal redesign? Better security flow to handle the new baggage tech, a completely overhauled international arrivals area, or simply a fresh architectural aesthetic that feels like Glasgow rather than a generic transit box?

The Route Strategy: With the US and Canadian routes back on the board for the summer, what is the next logical white whale for GLA's route development team? Do we double down on rebuilding a year-round transatlantic footprint, or should the focus be on securing a major legacy hub connection into the Middle East to rival EDI?

The Identity Crisis: For decades, there's been a debate on whether GLA should try to compete head-to-head with Edinburgh on every route, or carve out a distinct identity based on the massive outbound holiday market and the unique inbound tourism of the West Coast (golf, whisky, islands). As we look to the next decade, what should Glasgow Airport's primary identity be?

We’ve spent a long time being cynical about infrastructure delays and lost routes. Now that the money is being put to work and the network is expanding again, are you optimistic that GLA is finally reclaiming its crown, or do you think Edinburgh’s lead is too wide to close?

Keen to hear your thoughts, especially from the regulars who use the terminal month in, month out.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
