The last thing I want to do is shop before a flight, but that is NOT the intention at Heathrow. Rather, upon construction they decided the ugly massive mall appeal might be just the right thing, but the wrong thing before catching a flight! How about a comfortable (chairs lacking) moderately quite atmosphere with conducive and quiet aesthetics rewarding the passengers for being a client. Of course there can be shops, but why so many in a tacky display like Las Vegas! It's pitiful and painful, abusive sensory (noise & visuals), 5000 people absconded into one giant warehouse. Surprised at the English architects and social aesthetic (if any) specialists. I would expect something like this in the U.S., but our airports are relatively relaxing compared to this onslaught upon the human psyche.
