CAA Provisional Statistics Update

I don't know of any airline based in Redmond

What about Washington though? Either way it's a peculiar search term for somebody in the US.

The US Ryder Cup golf team arrived at CWL direct from Atlanta less than an hour ago.

It could be someone whose curiosity was aroused by the Ryder Cup and CWL.

September 2010 CAA stats

CWL handled 161,922 passengers in the month, down 10.9% on September 2009. Atms were down 12.5%.

Rolling 12-month total was 1,429,012, down 15.9% on a year ago.

The monthly and rolling total decline just goes on and on but, as at Exeter (that seems at last to have stopped the rot), it cannot go on for ever and I still believe that 2011 will see some growth even if it is small. By then the airport will have declined by a third in its annual passenger figures from its height a couple of years or so ago.

One word: depressing.

I don't know how they manage to find things to talk about on the other message board with so little happening!

It is depressing. I've noted the 'other board' seems to have gone very quiet in terms of posts in recent weeks - forums4airports often gets as many posts in a day as the 'other board' gets in a week.

I suspect this is because as you say there is nothing much to talk about now the Ryder Cup is over.

When CWL starts to pick up as I'm sure it will begin to next year - if it doesn't the airport will be in serious trouble having regard to how many passengers it has lost in the past three years - the other board will become busier.

I've noticed this on football message boards which is my other web interest. When a team goes through a bad patch posts about it reduce in number quite drastically after the doom mongers have had their say but give the team a bit of success and the posters come out of the woodwork to join in.

Many aviation followers are a bit like football fans when it comes to their local airport and I expect to see many more posts on that board, and hopefully on this one, when CWL begins to turn the corner.

If the White Paper on Civil Aviation published several years ago was believed, and the airport's own master plan, CWL should have been well on the way to 5 mppa by now - instead it's 1.4 mppa, down from 2.1 mppa not many years ago.

Ah the analogy between the football and aviation followers again. 😀 It's so true what you say. Aviation enthusiasts really do see things in the same light as football followers. You want to spend a night in the Albert pub in Yeadon, Leeds with Bigman. He's usually giving Manchester 'airport' a right old slating. Followed by the Manchester United club itself! 😆

I am sure Cardiff airport will pick-up. It's definitely under performing and I think it's only a matter of time before somebody sees it's potential.

CAA passenger stats for October

A total of 135,521 passengers passed through Cardiff Airport during October down -8.6% on the same month last year.

Rolling passenger totals stand at 1,416,288 down -15% on the previous 12 months

November 2010

73,068 passengers used CWL in November 2010, down 9.5% on November 2009. Atms were down 12.8% so the fall in passenger numbers may not be quite as bad as at first sight.

Rolling total was 1,408,525 on a year ago, down 14.4% on the previous year.

So it looks as though CWL will see a throughout of around 1.4 mppa in 2010 which is a third down on its figures of three years ago.

2010

CWL has certainly had another challenging year, comprehensively described by planenut's full list of figures.

The one glimmer of encouragement about December 2010's figures (and as with all UK airports they have to be read with the widespread weather disruption clearly in mind) is that although passenger numbers were down by 14.8%, atms for the month were down 19.2% which suggests a higher loading across the board, although as planenut's breakdown shows some routes did better and some worse.

So, in 2010 CWL handled 1.4 million passengers, the third consecutive year of substantial passenger losses - down from its best ever 2.1 mppa in 2007. In fact, 2010 is back to 2002 passenger number levels.

That's the bad news.

The better news is that, because much of the heavy passenger loss of recent years has been removed from the base upon which future numbers will be calculated, the decline is likely to be severely curtailed in 2011.

I had been looking for modest growth in 2011, from the summer period onwards anyway. With baby's decision in particular the growth might have to be delayed but I do believe that better days lie ahead.

Some of these sizable drops are on routes that should really be showing good signs of recovery. Mahon -26.8% down, Malta -25.4 down? Are there underlining reasons (or problems) for many of the drops in passenger numbers? For instance, do people choose FR or EZY from BRS over using Bmibaby? Is cost a factor, is it cheaper to fly from BRS?

I only ask these questions because comparing CWL with airports nearby CWL or the operators from there seem to be under performing.

For instance, do people choose FR or EZY from BRS over using Bmibaby? Is cost a factor, is it cheaper to fly from BRS?

There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that quite a number of South Wales residents do so.

It may be to do with price but I always take into account cost of journey to a more distant airport plus the time to get there and back afterwards before deciding that it's worthwhile heading off into the distance to catch a plane.

Some people are also creatures of habit. They get used to using easyJet or Ryanair and stick with them.

For years neighbours of ours used to religiously fly with Thomson Holidays from Cardiff Airport even though the same holidays were available 15 minutes down the road at Bristol Airport and the price was often the same. They had used CWL and were happy and confident about using it.

I think they now use BRS because one year the destination they wanted wasn't available from CWL, so now I suppose they've become used to BRS.

It's amazing how little things sway some people.

Some of the route specific passenger number drops at CWL are also down to fewer rotations than in previous years.

There is an issue with the days of operation of some routes. Not always can people afford week/two week holidays or some people enjoy weekend breaks.

This means along with 7 days a week some days of operation for lots of passengers is friday outbound and monday return. Especially for stag/hen parties.

Those passengers that have a timeshare are required mainly check-in on a saturday but sometimes also on a tuesday.

All these things need to be put into consideration. Easyjet & Ryanair from Bristol have more capacity, usually means cheaper fares to ensure seats are filled but main thing is that with the added capacity it is more likely for passengers to find a schedule that suits them.

January 2011

CAA provisional stats show CWL handled 58,788 passengers in the month, down 7.9% on January 2010. Atms were down 7.2%

Rolling 12-month total is 1,392,967, down 13.4% on a year ago.

As with all UK airports it has to be remembered that January 2010 was severely affected by bad weather so the comparision will not be quite like for like, given January 2011 was much less affected.

Nevertheless, it's not a bad month for CWL after its three years of toil.

According to latest CAA passenger statistics at total of 66,175 passed through Cardiff Airport during February, -16.1% down on February last year.

Rolling year passengers stand at 1,380,160, down -13.5% on the previous 12 months.

Very disappointing figures for the airport and it would appear that little success in being achieved by the WAG in their goal to get more flights to the airport. I think TheLocalYokel may have already asked this question, but I wonder if the right airport group is running the airport? The economy has been far from rosy throughout the UK but most regional airports of comparable size are performing far better.

February 2011 - CAA Stats

The continuing falling-off-the-cliff passenger figures are now mainly due to bmibaby's decision to reduce its presence at CWL.

On the face of things the figures are even worse because atms were down by only 10%.

However, because of baby's reduction there are more smaller aircraft flying as a percentage of the whole than a year ago meaning there are likely to be more than 10% fewer seats, so the 16.1% passenger reduction might be in line with a similar percentage reduction of available seats.

It's still very worrying. The eventual silver lining is that passenger numbers have fallen so low now that a relatively small injection of new routes or increased frequencies on existing routes will see quite spectacular percentage growth.

March 2011

CAA stats show 71,967 passengers were carried in March 2011, down 22.9% on March 2010. Atms were down just 9.1% which is a continuation of a worrying trend in itself when passenger numbers are down by so much more.

Rolling 12-month total was 1,358,843, down 13.8% on a year ago.

We are entering the fourth year of continuing substantial passenger falls and with bmibaby announcing the closure of its base from October it's a job to know when thing will begin to get better.

At least April ought to be better percentage-wise as it will be up against the volcano ash-closed airport for several days in April 2010 figures.

What percentage of the total flights at Cardiff does Bmi baby operate?

Apparently it's now down to around 14% of total passenger numbers which means about 190,000 passengers a year.

It used to be about a third of all passenger numbers used bmibaby but they've been reducing services over the past three years.

I always thought Bmibaby had a much larger presence at the airport but still, a 14% reduction next year is going to have an impact on the airport if they can't find an alternative operator.

bmibaby now represents only 10%-12% of CWL's passenger figures which means about 150,000 passengers per year. The 14% is apparently out of date.

At its peak baby carried just over a third of CWL's passenger numbers which then would have amounted to more than 600,000 people a year. What the airport wouldn't give to see even half of that figure added to its annual total at the moment!

I'm pretty certain that someone will pick up the bucket and spade sun routes that baby will relinquish. That would be a start but CWL needs more than that if it is to begin its recovery.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
