Eurowings

Eurowings are re-introducing the CRJ900 on multiple routes next summer including Birmingham and Manchester. Both will see 6x weekly CRJ flights from next March.

At the start I was concerned about their move to the A320 - to get decent loads on 3 daily flights seemed a tall order. Good to see they don't want to cut the frequency though.

According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source I know) Eurowings no longer have any CRJ900's, and that those aircraft have been transferred to Lufthansa CityLine. Will this mean we'll have a Eurowings operated by Lufthansa CityLine kind of setup?

Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings has been growing quickly this summer with capacity up by 32% when compared with last summer if we include operations performed on its behalf by germanwings. Its Vienna base welcomed several new European connections at the start of the S17 season, including Birmingham in the UK, the largest nation for international seats this summer, the same ranking that it had in S16.

Thanks for sharing smithy. Yes i wonder how Vienna is doing as i remember speaking to a few on here and they were abit worried that VIE might not make it through to another saeson, however it is still here and i would hope we could keep hold of BHX-VIE.

Here are the stats I found on the CAA website for each full month VIE operated in 2017:

April 3,605
May 4,014
June 4,287
July 4,515
August 4,455
September 3,496
October 3,353
November 2,305 (big drop!)
December 4,088 (did Jet2 also operate?)

July has seen the most passengers to date, and saw 26 return flights. If all 12 weekly rotations were on an A320 (174 seats), that works out at 4,524 seats one way and 9,048 seats both ways in the entire month. 4,515 passengers into 9,048 seats equals an average load factor of 49.9% which I think is very poor by LCC standards, although I haven't been looking at prices. Obviously it's a lot harder to calculate now we have a reduced schedule and A319/320 mix.

It seems to be a mix of A319's and A320's but I don't think that I've seen a load factor over 75% yet.

It's odd as routes get dropped with load factors well into the 90's yet others look bad but still trundle on. Vienna is still fairly new so maybe there are incentives still in play?

I was half expecting bad news when I saw the thread had been bumped! Good to see several of our airlines growing again.

Vienna being trimmed in S19 - the schedule is identical to this winter's (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun) instead of having Tuesday and Thursday flights added as per previous summers. Good to see them sticking with it though as they have been dropping routes elsewhere.

There are other city routes (Madrid, Warsaw, Budapest) where airlines seem to be perfectly fine with 3 or 4 flights per week, so maybe this reduction is what's needed to make it work.

Great to see another scheduled airline at BHX, I know Austrian are not new to BHX but the winter ski flights are for a few months only.

I wonder if they will use an Embraer 190 or Airbus ?? 👍

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
