Birmingham: Weather & Technical Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport

Ray,

I saw at least half a dozen coaches with Birmingham addresses emblazoned on the bodywork heading to and from Bristol Airport along the A38 early afternoon today. Do you know if any BRS flights diverted into BHX? The BRS website threw a complete wobbly this morning and got itself in such a state that it frightened itself and froze, so no help there with this query.

The BHX movements blog has been updated and the following was added, it's been posted under the section for today but I guess they could well have been from yesterday, although according to the site the only divert in on the 13th was a KLM F70 from Norwich?

G-ECOH DH8D Brussels Airlines SN2055 (BEL1NT) Brussels - Bristol - dep BEL9956 BRU
G-RJXJ E135 BM1822 (BMR1822) Hamburg/Frankfurt - Bristol
EI-FAW AT76 EI3280 (REA80DR) Dublin - Bristol positioned out
EI-REI AT72 EI3842 (REA42BR) Cork - Bristol- positioned Cork as REA372P

Thank you, Ray.

According to the BRS website the bmi regional to FRA was combined with the HAM flight this morning but on its return diverted to Exeter because of the fog. Maybe they've got it wrong and it went to BHX.

The morning SN (by Flybe - sounds like a race horse) from BRU went to BHX and the morning EIR from DUB was shown on the BRS website this morning as diverted, so BHX is the obvious place for it to have gone. The EIR ORK-BRS doesn't appear at all on the BRS website, either arrivals or departures, so the assumption is that it operated to BHX and flew back to ORK as a positioning flight.

So it does seem that the diversions you've listed do refer to today.

That makes sense then although it doesn't solve the mystery of the coaches if BHX saw nothing from BRS on Thursday, a day trip to Weston-Super-Mare gone slightly off track? 😀

A Ryanair from Budapest for BRS diverted to East Midlands yesterday morning because of the weather but would they use Birmingham coach firms? Seems doubtful and anyway about six 50-seater coaches would be many more than would be needed for even a full B738's passenger numbers.

There were also several coaches from South Wales about the same time but they were to take passengers back to Wales from the TOM flight to CWL that diverted to BRS because of fog at CWL.

Weston on a misty and foggy day is not my idea of a good day out. :shok: Then again I had to travel in from the country to school at Weston for five years - on Bristol L-type half-cab buses.

There have been a few diversions in the past few days as a result of fog. Air India was delayed last night too.

BHX took in a Lufthansa flight from MAN this morning after a Thomson B767 decided to spew hydraulic fluid all over the runway. 23L was used for landings but due to the need to backtrack, it caused delays and therefore diverts (17 aircraft were holding at one point!).

I have a question though, has BHX done something to annoy Singapore airlines? My friend met the diverted SQ328 from MAN at LHR, and asked the pilot why he chose LHR over BHX. The pilot apparently 'chuckled' and said 'ops would have my guts for garters if I went to BHX'. I have no idea what the meaning behind that statement was?

I would say that SQ (the same as most Airlines) would prefer to divert to an Airport where they had some representation to handle all the fiddly bits (like fual accounts / customs etc) than go into an Airport where they would need to make ad-hoc arrangements. Obviously if is was an urgent diversion then different rules would apply but on a normal run of the mill event like this it is better for an Airline to have their support network in place. Don't forget that Air Asia have sworn never to come into BHX again (I still have not found out how BHX managed to upset them).

UA27 diverted to MAN this morning. Im assuming it was runway related.
It was very foggy @0630 this morning. Both the UAL and a WX RJ85,positioning in to operate a charter to Perpignon,we're both holding @ FL90 when I got home from work.

Is the ILS out of service on 33 at the moment with all the associated runway works?

ILS 33 is localiser only and ILS 15 is completely unusable as its the one at the site of the runway works.

I think 33 was used from Friday-Monday and 15 was used on Tuesday. 33 has been used yesterday & today. So is 33 or 15 not being used now?

With EMA still closed is their any chance of freight flights diverting to BHX tonight???
I know the UPS flights will probably go to STN but I don't know about the others.

There is a Star Air 762 currently holding over Leicester, they've been using BHX on and off for the last few months when EMA have had runway maintenance so that may be a possibility.

Yes,there is also a DHL 76F in a holding pattern just off LPL.I'm expecting that to go off to BRU but the Starair might just be a possibility.

The list of aircraft that operated EMA flights to/from BHX yesterday.

EI-EVO B738 Ryanair Malaga-East Midlands-Malaga
G-ECOG DH8 Flybe Edinburgh-East Midlands
G-FLBE DH8 Flybe Glasgow-East Midlands
G-JECY DH8 Flybe Belfast City
G-OZBR A321 Monarch East Midlands- Malta
G-RJXK E135 BMI Regional Brussels-East Midlands
G-ZBAH A320 Monarch East Midlands-Palma-East Midlands

A Flybe Dash 8 G-ECOF landed from EDI this morning with hydraulic issues, the runway was closed for a time whilst the fluid spillage was cleaned. Most aircraft managed to land after holding with only Air France diverting up to MAN.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
