I have wondered how they could link the new pier to the existing terminal. I assume they will build the facade of the extension PDQ before securing a temporary walkway from the existing building through the building site extension to the permanent link (and then onward to the new pier).

The speed of the construction is astounding, that's for sure.

I feel there is an urgency to get as much apron space back as possible, so, we could see a situation where the apron is made ready for the middle of S18.

As for the pier, I doubt that would be ready until early 2019 at the earliest. I'm sure I had read that the jetways wouldn't be delivered until the end of 2018. Despite how quickly the pier seems to be progressing, the fit out may take a little longer.

Hi all

I’ve been lurking for a while, but decided to join due to the wonderful photos and links you’ve been posting (it was my drive around video linked earlier)

Here’s an earlier video for posterity;

Please, keep up the great posts!

Welcome to the F4A group and thank you for posting. As you may have seen we are a small (on the Manchester threads) community at present, but a friendly lot.

You may recognise some of us from other aviation forums.

The new T2 west road is open:

As is the Airport City link (T2 roundabout slip looks imminent too):

Also, the T1 roundabout looks set to be removed from Nov 29 until next spring. And the T2TP link pier is growing as well as the main pier too.

Survey work begins on 11th December in advance of the new double taxiway past the Thomas Cook hangar. I’m including it here as even though it’s outside the TCX hangar, it’s designed to aid the flow Tom T2 and is only taking place becaise of the T2 development.

Makes it hard to believe they won't end up demolishing pier C of T1 rather sooner than anticipated. Feels odd that they still plan to graft it on to the the new A380 pier.

One option is to take off the 1986 satellite and leave the 1974 pier. I assume that would make enough room.

You are quite right - I think that is the current option. It does rather cut across the construction of the pier there which appears stunted (but wider) compared the the rest.

Terminal 2 Transformation Programme (TP)

Works to continue the demolition of the West Pier of Terminal 2 are now very evident, with huge
chunks of the building having been removed. The first of six “Tower Cranes” were erected on site
in November – an interesting short video showing the arrival and erection of the first one can be
seen here:-

For me this is quite significant, when I first started work at Manchester Airport in the Planning
Department, the whole of T2 was still a farmers field! Indeed I recall that my “test” prior to my
interview on applying for my first job at Manchester Airport was to choose the correct layout for
Terminal 2 from a number of Drawing Board options. Well I passed and chose the correct option
and then joined MA all those years ago back in 1989. I was assigned to the T2 planning team and
was one of a small group of people who were responsible for arranging the trial flights when testing
the terminal. It is therefore quite amazing to see that very building now being partially demolished
for the next phase of development at Manchester Airport. I certainly look forward to flying out of the
new facility.

Old West pier is virtually gone. Link pier and new pier still growing.

Airbridge lift tower and steelwork on the most western tip now very visible.

Top half of departures forecourt exit ramp is now gone.

And all the piling caps for the first new MSCP are now visible above ground level.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
