Leeds Bradford: Weather & Technical Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
I came home on the LS414 operated by Boeing 737-800, G-JZHP this morning.

Considering the weather forecast and the message updates we were getting sent from Jet2holidays yesterday we were expecting a bumpy ride home from Dalaman.
Yes we had an unavoidable 2 hour delay but the flight turned out uneventful to be honest and we had a very good landing onto runway 14 at 03:20 this morning.

Well done to everyone involved in getting us home quickly and safely..

Has anyone managed to keep track of what flights delayed from yesterday actually operated? I've tried valiantly to keep up but the LBA website and Flightradar just don't give me the information easily enough in such severe times of disruption

I wasn't able to. Flightradar was no help. As an example GDFN went out to PMI yesterday (presumably to pick up stranded pax- it had a W suffix) There was nothing showing for its return. I kept checking- but nothing! Next thing I hear from BlueManc on here that it flew back into MAN as a divert. But FR24 still only shows the outbound, its looks as if the aircraft is still in PMI!

Was on yesterdays LS242 from Nice, arrived into LBA 10 minutes early at 18.04 on runway 14 getting probably a last flight on a 733 G-GDFT before it goes with the others to the graveyard in the sky. Got down first time, extremely hard landing, aircraft was being buffeted by the wind, but down safely without too much drama though some thought otherwise. Praise to the flight deck crew as some airlines would have probably made a half hearted attempt at landing and diverted. Other than building a brand new runway pointing in the other direction, which is never going to happen due to cost and availability of land, we are going to have to live with this every year as we are stuck with 32/14. Not sure that a 300m extension to the runway would have made any difference to the number of diverts over the weekend.

Crews will never make a half hearted attempt at landing as you put it. Each approach is different in the wind. Some get in, some don’t. Off course if based in LBA you get used to the local difficulties down each runway

Extra runway distance means you can bring more fuel to hold or make another approach etc

And to illustrate the point, (although many will take a more cynical view which is well earned over the years by TUi), today's inbound TUi from Palma diverted to MAN after two missed approaches, the second of which must have seen it almost on rhe runway given how low it was as it passed the Hawthorne Farm on climb out. In fact, we thought it was a standard 32 departure until we checked. The wind was 270, 20 gusting 30 knots. Everything else landed first time. It was an end of season flight on a (probable) MAN based aircraft.

Sounds rather familiar.

That is creating a cross wind component. The gusting can create wind shear as can the normal mean wind.
Given it's had a 2nd attempt before diverting (standard pilot / company procedures for most airlines) I would say that is not a familiar sound. Let's face it - TUI would have not attempted a 2nd.

Bit better than the ACE Ryanair crew on Saturday night - didn't even attempt a 2nd approach either time of the go around.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
