Cardiff: Airport Cargo Operations

Use this prefix for new threads for Cardiff Airport
It’s interesting they’ve not gone for a night operation. Although getting freight out through brynglas at say lunchtime is still easier than bringing it the other way during late afternoon.

Assuming it goes through the tunnel. Depends entirely on where the freight is being shipped to.

Has anyone seen anything official from the airport about this route?

The majority of the cargo is believed to be fruit and veg. Would find it unlikely if it was all staying in wales.

Where does that info come from?
It also depends on who the customer is.

From the press release / Egyptian gazette:

As part of EgyptAir Cargo’s strategy to support Egyptian exports, the company will also launch services to Cardiff, UK, with the start of the winter season, creating a new destination for Egyptian vegetables, fruits and other products

Tesco, Asda, and Lidl, have all got large distribution centres this side of the Severn Bridge.
The DCs for Tesco and Asda are ambient depot not produce. Their produce depots are at Avonmouth. There is an Aldi DC in Cardiff as well. There's also a Sainsbury's depot in Bristol, Lidl in Avonmouth and Morrisons in Bridgwater.

Which is why I think a lot of it will be going east.

It looks like now the Cairo route will start on the 1st November

How reputable are these reports for these cargo flights? I haven't seen an official announcement apart from less reputable sources. I tried to dig further but found nothing. Any thoughts?

Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a european air cargo situation where it’s supposed to be starting then never does.

The idea that the flight is bringing in Egyptian produce seems somehow unlikely. A daily A330 of dates..? Is it not more likely to be feeding the new Temu warehouse in Birmingham?

Egypt is a substantial exporter of produce such as oranges and sweet potatoes. In fact, I think it is the world's largest exporter of oranges so it is entirely possible they could be looking at ops to Cardiff. Fruit and veg being perishable, it might be viewed upon as a way of prolonging the life of produce from Egypt to the South West of the UK.

It could bring in a lot of stuff but fresh produce is mentioned in an article.

It’s the time of year we can’t grow fruit and and a lot of veg outdoors here - so I don’t think the flights carrying a lot of it is out of the question.

Strawberries, Onions and Potatoes can all come from egypt during the european winter.

People here in the UK expect there to be salad stuff in the shops in the middle of winter!

I worked at an Indian grocery for a time and was interested to see that nearly all the winter tomatoes came from the Canary Islands.
I'm pretty sure the same went (and still goes) for cucumbers, lettuces, "Spring" onions etc.

As Cardiff12345 says, Egypt is another place where they can grow things at times of the year when they can't grow them in Europe

We reached out for confirmation and comment a while ago and have received nothing official so far from either CWL or WG. With the suggested plans and slots moving around somewhat its probably best to classify this one as a "wait until we see it for ourselves" item of progress.

Precisely, although we'd hope Egyptair are a little more reputable than European Cargo.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
