Birmingham: CAA Provisional Statistics Update

Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport
Air India saw 3816 + 2920 so with 16 flights in Feb I make it around 83% LF?

Turkish up 40.5%

Turkmenistan up 20% looks as though they are recovering after an initial dip when AI started.

PIA up 6.5%

Emirates up 11%

United down 16% but less capacity than last year.

Highlights:

Brussels up 23%, Copenhagen up 17.7%, Paris up 16.8%, Dusseldorf up 22%, Frankfurt up 7.5%, Stuttgart up 85%, Dublin up 18.6%, Milan up 22%, Amsterdam up 6.6%, Faro up 23% and Funchal up 28%.

Must try harder:

Berlin -21%, Hamburg -16%. Hamburg seems a one off but Berlin consistently disappoints, if the yields aren't high then I fear for the route. Stockholm has returned at 4x weekly, it was very hit and miss before so we'll see how it performs this time.

I notice that 6100 were carried to Bridgetown, had no idea this route had quietly grown to be so big? I thought it was one or two weekly departures at most, but its carried more than EWR??

Good news for Thomson either way.

I also forgot to add that Feb saw Emirates back above a 90% load factor.

Hi Ray, i am terrible at maths, but took great interest in your 93% load factor for Air India which i noticed you did include a ???????. On another forum they have Air India at 82 % load factor ?????

I must admit i did think WOW when i saw 93%, but still 82% is still good for a new route 6 months old.

My apologies for the typo it should have read 83%, which as you say is still a very good load, I'll change it now.

I usually put the ? there as I'm a bit of an amateur at working out load factors 🙂

Birmingham Achieves Continued Passenger Growth

Birmingham Airport handled over half a million passengers in February 2014, with Dublin, Dubai and Amsterdam proving to be the most popular destinations.

Some 580,453 passengers used the Airport over the 28 days, an 8.5% increase compared to the same month last year.

Scheduled traffic during February increased by 11.9% and nearly a quarter (20.7%) of all passengers travelled on a long-haul service.

Turkmenistan up 20% looks as though they are recovering after an initial dip when AI started.

Wonder where Turkmenistan will be sending that brand new 777? lol 🙂

😆

Reports were they would drop to a permanent 738 and maybe go down to 2x weekly after AI returned, yet still the 757 is doing 4x weekly and getting an 81% load factor at that. The online reviews don't seem to get any better though.

I found it interesting that Turkmenistan took such a noticeable hit when AI came back as I don't recall the same thing occurring when AI originally launched in 2005. During the intermitting years they've had to battle Mahan Air as well so they have obviously built up a decent customer base - there will be always be a market for low cost travel to India so they must be doing something right to have lasted so long. I'm interested in why they have ordered the 77L though; can't see that they need such an aircraft. Turkmenistan are indeed a curious little airline.

Turkmenistan probably intend to do Ashgabat-Toronto direct at some point and they are using the 77L to pick up passengers at BHX? I'm surprised it is still doing so well after it took a hit when AI first arrived in August as mentioned above but low cost travel to India must still be keeping it going. I suppose an aircraft upgrade was inevitable after they've been here for what, 15 years?

Good load factor for Emirates - above 90%, when was the last time they were above 90%? If they stay consistently above 90% it should be telling as to where they take their BHX service - third daily flight, etc.

Apparently the route development team were in Dubai last month meeting with Emirates.

Hi there Ray, its going to be very interesting to see what that the passenger number figures for march are when they are released shortly, i wonder if the momentium can keep flowing from Jan & feb so far this year with 10% up on last year for Jan & 8.2 % for february last month, do you think it could be 7.5 % to 8% for march you think or is it going to be any lower than 7.5 % now that would be nice wouldn't it....andyc

CAA Stats March 2014

654,377 passengers used the terminal in March, up 4.6% on March 2013. Atms were up 3.9%. Rolling 12-month total 9,238,562, up 3.7% on a year ago.

Excellent figures bearing in mind that Easter is later this year whereas in 2013 it was a major influence on UK airports' passenger numbers in March last year.

Great figures. In comparison to the other airports:

Heathrow – 5,735,608 (-2.8%)
Gatwick – 2,707,835 (+5.1%)
Manchester – 1,434,504 (-0.09%)
Stansted – 1,343,194 (-0.3%)
Edinburgh – 733,176 (+4.8%)
Luton – 707,909 (-1.0%)
Birmingham – 654,377 (+4.6%)
Glasgow – 531,791 (+4.3%)
Bristol – 426,294 (-0.2%)
Liverpool – 297,953 (-5.1%)

And for key routes:

Dubai = 48,204 (+6.2%) - Higher growth than any other UK airport other than GLA (37,851, +15%)
Amritsar/Delhi = 4,113 (--%)
Istambul = 9,728 (+39.4%)
Islamabad = 7,904 (-28.3%) - all airports seem to be down (MAN was down 42%), any idea why?
Turkmenistan = 6,260 (+20.0%) - impressive given Air India's presence. Suddenly it makes sense to increase capacity to a 777.
New York = 7,621 (-1.0%) - EWR isn't as popular as once thought. Will JFK be that much popular?

Thanks to woodhousen on skyscraper city for the info.

(MAN was down 42%), any idea why?

For MAN, there is the small issue of 3xA340-300 flights removed, when that carried over 340 per flight, the figures are going to be down when you take those 340 per flight out of the equation.

Also Hassan,

If you are going to copy and paste information directly from another forum, please could you credit that person's work.

Your last post makes it look like you have written and researched that info, when I know for a fact its a direct copy and paste from another site.

Many thanks.

Also, Emirates had a 91% load factor for March, Air India 89% and Turmenistan an impressive 92%. Turkish Airlines and PIA were at about the 70% mark.

It may also be a wise move to check what you've copied and pasted is actually correct 🙂

Amritsar/Delhi = 4,113 (--%)

4113 was the pax figure just to Delhi, there was also another 4114 pax that travelled on to Amritsar making a total of 8227 on the route. The load factor is correct at just slightly under 90%. I don't know whether AI want an extension onto YYZ or whether it's BHX pushing it but with the way the route has started I really hope there are some discussions happening about ATQ-DEL-BHX-DEL-ATQ going daily.

DXB- great once again, 91% load factor, if EK can gets the yields right a 3rd service can't be too far away.
IST- another nice increase but with a load factor of around 70% it maybe needs a little more time before going 12/14 weekly, definitely heading in the right direction though.
ISB- Pakistan didn't really do great from any UK airport last month but with a load factor of 73% it's not too bad.

New York = 7,621 (-1.0%) - EWR isn't as popular as once thought.

Considering the capacity is the same as a year ago I don't think we can expect too much, and -1% is the monthly loss of around 60 odd pax so hardly disastrous.

Turkmenistan, wow, 6260 and a load factor of 92% based on a 4xweekly 757, the really good thing though is it doesn't seem to have adversely affected AI at all. Who'll make the first move with extra capacity?

Berlin, -15%, I really don't know how this is surviving, either the yields are fantastic or it's on the chop list? With the capacity cuts on HAM it was down 8%, maybe it's time for Flybe to return with a 2x daily business friendly schedule. DUS saw a nice 16% increase but will it stay that way once it moves to Germanwings? Barbados saw a 90% rise proving there is further long haul IT capacity to be had a BHX if someone can be persuaded to offer it.

All in all a pretty good month.

T5 could easily get in there first but I'm sure 2 links to YYZ could work. Couldn't they? 8227 looks even better than 4113 at first sight. I'd expect it to go daily at some point too.

Speaking of the yields, what are they like for EK in comparison to other UK airports?

ISB- Pakistan didn't really do great from any UK airport last month but with a load factor of 73% it's not too bad.

Loss of AirBlue affected MAN in particular but I think they'll have stagnated at BHX, for now anyway.

I can see why they want to upgrade to a 777. Difference is they've got ~300 seats to fill as opposed to just under 200.

We have the likes of Thomson & Monarch which could offer that sort of service. Virgin offering a seasonal, once-weekly service would be nice but I doubt it.

Heads Up!

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man.... Landing is the first!
i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
