Birmingham: CAA Provisional Statistics Update

Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport
T5 could easily get in there first but I'm sure 2 links to YYZ could work. Couldn't they? 8227 looks even better than 4113 at first sight. I'd expect it to go daily at some point too.

Personally I'd prefer AI to concentrate on the BHX-India market rather than tagging YYZ on the end. Turkmenistan may well decide to go direct, who knows what's going on behind the scenes.

Speaking of the yields, what are they like for EK in comparison to other UK airports?

I've heard rumours for and I've heard rumours against, only the EK bean counters will know for certain.

Loss of AirBlue affected MAN in particular but I think they'll have stagnated at BHX, for now anyway.

Although only there for a short time Air Blue showed that there is more BHX-Pakistan demand out there, the PIA website is showing MAN-ISB up to 5x weekly for the summer so I hope BHX have stated their case for an extra flight.

Another good set of figures BHX, well done!! On a general note the figures for most airports are showing signs of flat-lining with a mere 0.1% growth compared with the same month last year.

Hi there ray, i thought that after seeing excellent January 2014 passenger figures 0f 10% & then 8.4 % for February figures were very good, but march were 4.2 was a let down, lets hope that April can show a better percentage of at least 7% plus, otherwise it might start o look like at mismatch year...instead of good growth where the airport should be....andyc

ray will be back very soon but perhaps I could make the point that a number of other airports that had performed well in January and February, and before that, were flat or saw slight declines in March, mainly because of the later Easter this year.

BHX's performance was creditable in that context.

Let's hope Ray enjoys his break, he deserves it. I and all the other forum members really appreciate the work he puts in to keep us abreast of what is happening at BHX.

I agree one hundred per cent with those sentiments.

Thanks very much folks :hatsoff: The family and I had a great time in Cornwall with the highlight being my youngest taking his first steps, all three of them. 🙂

Is BHX projected to finish behind Edinburgh this year, again? As far as year-on-year changes are concerned?

What's EDI's figures at the moment, I don't really keep much track of other airports?

It's probably too early to tell anyway but EDI is seeing quite a few new services this year with increases on others so it may just be a step too far.

It's probably too early to tell anyway but EDI is seeing quite a few new services this year with increases on others so it may just be a step too far.

In March EDI handled 733,149 passengers, up 4.8% on March 2013 with rolling 12-month total at 9,913,089, up 8.8% on a year ago.

BHX was 654,376, up 4.6% on March 2013 with rolling 12-month total at 9,238,561, up 3.7% on a year ago.

It would be a phenomenal effort to overtake EDI this year.

Thanks for those.

I don't think there is any hope of catching EDI who could quite easily pass 10mppa this year. I'd be happy if we could approach the 2008 record of 9,627,589, to beat it would mean adding just over 500k pax this year which I'm not sure is possible. The last two years have seen circa 300k pax added each year.

Thanks for that. I suppose beating EDI is quite a stretch, it was just a thought of mine really. EDI has a few new services coming in which will help it more really. Of course, we're only in April so anything could happen.

BHX and EDI

Just to develop the BHX v EDI 'contest' with passenger numbers, a crucial advantage that EDI enjoys its the links to London. BHX is too near the capital for an air link to be viable.

In 2013 EDI handled 9,775,026 passengers. Of these 2,983,570 flew between EDI and the London airports (LHR, LGW, STN and LCY - 39,063 also used SEN but I've not counted these in the above figures).

So without its London traffic EDI would have handled 6,791,456 passengers in 2013.

Incidentally, a similar situation exists at GLA.

In 2013 GLA handled 7,358,103 passengers with 2,241,060 being to/from London. Without its London traffic GLA would have handled 5,117,043 in 2013, a full million fewer that BRS which is another airport too close to London for an air link to be viable.

Interesting stats, thanks for posting them.

Of the 2,983,570 pax that flew EDI to London I wonder what percentage were O&D and what percentage were connecting. I'd assume pax connecting onto other flights, especially long haul, could well have used other connections available from EDI so still adding to the stats, it would be interesting to know the figures.

Why didn't I think of the LHR pax? Another note is that BHX has enjoyed some growth in international traffic this year.

Passenger Numbers Soar as Birmingham Airport Records Busiest April in History

Birmingham Airport has recorded the busiest April in its history, as more than 750,000 passengers passed through the terminal last month, a 16.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

Latest figures reveal the Airport handled 758,456 passengers in April, beating its previous record for the month set in 2009 by 5.7%.

The record-breaking month also saw a major rise in the number of passengers flying on long-haul services from Birmingham, up by 20.9% compared to April last year.

Scheduled routes that saw the biggest increase last month were Jersey (+173.2%), Fuerteventura (+132.1%), Stuttgart (+98%), Arrecife (+78.2%) and Faro (+77.6%). Charter services to Malta (+100%), Portugal (+100%) and Italy (+90.6%) also experienced significant growth.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s CEO, said: “To record the busiest April in our history is a tremendous achievement. It demonstrates the strong demand that exists for flights to and from Birmingham and the progress we have made over the past 12 months in particular.

“A strong performance in April is the perfect way to enter the summer season, a period which will also see Birmingham become the first UK airport outside of London to offer direct charter flights to China, as well as new flights starting to Porto, Cologne, Florence, Ibiza, Malta and Athens, among others.”

The April pax numbers are terrific.Best ever April!!!
It does prove that given the right routes and airlines BHX can compete on an even keel with the big boys to the north and south-east of us.However I dare say most airports will be showing some growth as the economy seems to be getting stronger.
The West Midlands economy if you believe the hype locally is currently growing at a faster rate than most so now is the time for trying to encourage airlines to give BHX a go.Airlines such as EK,AI,UA,BE,ZB,TK,LH,AF,have all seen growth and in some cases putting on larger aircraft for the summer.I believe 2014/15 is an important period for BHX to not only maintain what they have but also bring in more.STAR ALLIANCE carriers could be a good place to start,Austian to Vienna would be an excellent way to kick it all off.
The next few months are going to be very interesting indeed.

I know this is going to be a very unpopular post amongst the Birmingham posters on here, but I have emailed Paul Kehoe about this, as despite the good news it accompanies, it is factually incorrect yet he insists on using it in most press releases.

Just like there would be annoyance if the shoe was on the other foot, the Birmingham-Beijing flights are not the first charters to China outside London, as East Midlands and Manchester have had charters to Sanya in China with Airtours, and Manchester has had at least 2 separate charters to Beijing on Air Berlin and Atlas Air. Im pretty sure Etihad has run one too.

Im all for celebrating success, but, lets keep it factual and correct.

I wasn't aware of the charters you mention from other airports but if that is the case then I quite agree with you.

Hi Ray,

Yes, the Airtours Manchester-Sanya flights ran in 2007 at least, possibly into 2008. It was an A330 with flight numbers MYT085/086.

Air Berlin ran 2 charters from MAN-PEK in August 2011 flight numbers AB1502/1503 on A330-200

The dates for the Atlas Air and Etihad elude me but I will try and dig them out.

Edit: Atlas Air B747-400 to PEK may have been July 2012 but will try and re-confirm.

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
