Use this prefix for new threads for Leeds Bradford Airport
Not underwhelming but realistic given their 10% capacity reductions for the first half of 2024, which is affecting their whole network and seriously affecting their expansion plans and profit forecasts.
That's your opinion this is mine. Wizz are adding aircraft at bases where we have had a frequencies reduced/suspended. But sure..

Gdansk for example, adding an 8th aircraft in November but yet our service for winter is suspended.. make it make sense. As I said. Underwhelming (my opinion obviously)

I will say it again but something isn’t right at Wizz. Yes they have engine issues, but to me that’s a smoke screen. I don’t know anything, just putting 2 and 2 together. Yes I may be getting 5 and I hope I am, but let’s just wait and see

They`ve just been forced, kicking and screaming to pay over £1.2M in unjustly rejected 261 claims by the CAA as well...makes you think

Overnight it looks like Wizz Air have removed from sale quiet a few routes across Europe with both Leeds-Bradford & Birmingham affected
Disappointing as it is to report Leeds-Bradford to Krakow route has now gone as of end of March. Its not a route loss as we have both Jet2 & Ryanair serving the route.

Leaves Wizz Air with just the follow 9x weekly services on 4+ routes from LBA for summer 2024

Gdansk = 2x weekly (Tue & Sat)
Warsaw Chopin = 2x Weekly (Thu & Sun)
Bucharest = 2x weekly (Mon & Fri)
Cluj Napoca = 3x weekly (Tue, Thu & Sat

I'll post the updated schedule later.

Wizz Air's Financial losses doubled for the last quarter compared to that in 2022. The airlines CEO keeps saying not to worry. Whilst it rival Ryanair made money over the same period.
I get that the engine inspection thing with the Airbus NEO's is not their fault and will contine hurt them until at least the end of 2024.
But I'm beginning to wonder if they have become the new version of Air Berlin or Primera Air, Low Cost Airline for which profit is always going to happen soon rather than anytime soon..

I‘m have a few Wizz shares in my ISA, and the half year results published on 9th November showed a 400 million euro profit for the first half of the year. The results also state that they have having to ground 45 aircraft for engine inspections from Jan 24, but that they have agreed compensation with the manufacturers to cover all of the losses. Their share price is down by about a third compared to 5 years ago. Easyjet’s has halved over the same period. Ryanair’s share price has performed strongly.

In terms of network planning they are obviously working with reduced capacity and so will focus on the highest yielding routes across their entire network. They said as much in their investor statement

Wizz Air’s LBA summer 2024 Schedule

As disappointing as it is, Wizz Air’s Leeds/Bradford updated revised Summer 2024 schedule is now on sale which sees them operating 9x weekly flights to 4x destinations which include Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Gdansk & Warsaw Chopin.
It is worth noting many of Airbus A321NEO’s are not appearing in the website booking system due to the on-going engine issues which they hope to have resolved by end of the year. Hopefully then we may then see either the Krakow & Katowice routes reappear.

I am not going to dwell on my theory or reiterate my doubts about Wizz, but please consider this. If as has been sensibly suggested they are focusing on the more profitable routes then that suggests the previous reports of Wizz performing really well at LBA are wide of the mark. If they are genuinely performing well then there is more to this than just engine issues. What have we now - about 50comparef to when they moved to LBA. Engine issues aren't grounding 50% of the fleet. Smoke and fire springs to mind here unfortunately

Sorry that should have read 50% compared to when they started at LBA

Routes may have been performing well at LBA, but are other routes on Wizz Air's network performing better? If an airline is encountering difficulties with resources and cuts need to be made, they will cut the lower yielding routes in favour of the higher yielding ones. This would seem to indicate that other routes on the Wizz Air network are returning great yields than the routes dropped from LBA. If the airline didn't have resource issues, then the LBA services may well have continued.

It will be interesting to see what the airport have to say about this situation at the next ACC, it was they, after all that said Wizz were very happy with their perfomance at Leeds.

Where profit margins are tight the last thing an airline would want is diverts, see where im coming from here.. Look at the diversion rate for wizz this winter season out of Leeds, cuts right into any profit, Bet you now wizz have at best broke even out of LBA based on the amount of flights operating against the diversion rate, pax figures are good as WH Mentioned, the pax are filling the planes hence why wizz is with us still, but you simply cannot expand out of an airport where diverts are more common in a current environment where other factors are at play ie ongoing engines issues, again this brings me back to points I've mentioned in the past regs airfield restrictions.

Exactly. And if things were better than marginal then the number of diverts referred to by @LBA4EVER would be irrelevant, however he has a valid point. Something just doesn't add up to me. I have said before more than happy to be proven wrong but alas I fear I won't be.

Separately would A320s rather than 321s possibly reduce the number of diverts? If so why aren't they doing this,? It's definitely a strange one

There's a lot of focussing on just LBA here and theories about diverts etc. (as usual), but that doesn't apply at BHX yet they too are included in the cuts. There are many other cuts across Europe. Do they all have a divert problem? And exactly how many Wizz flights have diverted anyway?

Has it crossed anyone's mind that these routes have been canned temporarily by agreement with LBA because they are already covered by other airlines? If Wizz need to make cuts then best cut the routes that are still served so the market for those flights isn't lost completely, and in the future it's easier to bring them back. We were told up front there would be cuts to routes and frequencies and not just at LBA. Some routes were cut this month and were due back later in the year. Now a second tranche have been cut and maybe they will come back later too. It's going to take into 2025 to complete the engine checks so throughout 2024 there will be reductions. I suspect some airports have suffered far worse than LBA. Perhaps they have all done so because of their diverts too?!

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
